East Africa Wildlife Adventure
Tanzania | Tour ref: KT
Kenya and Tanzania
An exciting journey through the classic east African landscapes of the Rift Valley, with its lush slopes, wide lakes and thousands of flamingos; the grasslands of the Masai Mara and Serengeti, providing perhaps the most immediately recognisable images of Africa, with their acacia trees and herds of wild animals; and the impressive sight of Ngorongoro Crater, one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. During the trip you will see Masai tribesmen walking across the landscape in their red robes, elephant wandering in front of Kilimanjaro, and visit Olduvai Gorge – site of some of the earliest hominid remains.
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater, 12 miles across and 2,000 feet deep, is one of Tanzania’s major sites for wildlife. The high walls of the crater are a natural barrier to many of the animals, and not only create a range of habitat zones but also mean that there is no migration to speak of, so for spotting game it’s a great place to visit at any time of year. The crater floor has forests, thickets, a soda lake and grasslands, across which zebra, wildebeest, lion, flamingos, black rhino and many other impressive species roam. Game drives in this dramatic location are always rewarding.
Great Migration
In early summer, one of Nature’s most extraordinary and biggest spectacles takes place on the plains of east Africa. Thousands of wildebeest and zebra are on the move from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara, chasing the green shoots of new grass that spring up after the rains. This Great Migration is an extraordinary combination of sight and sound, with the grazers shadowed by the impressive predators of Africa: lion, leopard and crocodile. If you join this itinerary in May or June you will have the best chance of seeing this amazing event.
