A Hands On Adventure

Working with the expert guides and rangers who lead Project Bear in the High Tatras, you will search not only for bears, but also wolves, wildcats and more, sleeping in remote mountain cottages, usually reserved only for park rangers. As well as helping to fund the project, each participant has the opportunity to help in expanding our knowledge of bear behaviour. You are encouraged to fully participate in monitoring bear movements and behaviour whilst out in the field - all observations are helpful to finding out more about the wildlife of the area.

Tatra Mountains of Slovakia and Poland

The Tatras Mountains stretch along the border between Poland and Slovakia and are one of Europe’s most diverse environments. The dramatic mountain landscapes still receive relatively few foreign visitors, yet they offer fantastic opportunities for walking. This itinerary includes access to areas within the Western and Belianske Tatras that are usually off-limits to the public and strictly controlled as a National Park.

Central European Adventure

Walk in the wild areas of central Europe and explore the natural attractions of the mountains, meadows, thermal pools and forests while joining the staff of Project Bear who are carrying out exciting work to protect local bears. As well as exploring the landscape, you will have time to discover the beautiful medieval cities of Krakow and Spisska Sobota.

Biodiversity and conservation

The High Tatras range has a high level of biodiversity. There are a number of plant species unique to the area and there are also endemic subspecies of mammal. The area contains all of ‘old’ Europe’s mammals including the full complement of predators ranging from bears and wolves to wildcats and pine martens. The conservation work involved in this project focuses on the apex predators and aims to help to preserve the ecosystem through community education and hands-on monitoring of populations and behaviours.
