Zanzibar & Selous

Selous was wonderful: wildlife  and lodge were excellent. Enjoyed the flight in the Cessner from a grass airstrip.  That was an adventure.

[Least enjoyed] We started the trip in Dar es Salaam in a small hotel with no facilities, no pool or bar.  The nearby estuary was not suitable for swimming and we we told that there was no point in going into Dar es Salaam as there was absolutely nothing of interest to see.  That was the first day and a half of the holiday.

The Dar Es Salaam stop needs rearranging.  I know the train only runs twice a week but it is a disappointing start to a holiday badly misdescribed in the itinerary  My luggage did not arrive in London with me. However Air Kenya were lovely about it, tracked it down to Nairobi immediately and couriered it to me next day. There were five other people in the same situation who had come from Zanzibar to Nairobi on the same airline, which was not Air Kenya, but some small firm, so of course Air Kenya blamed them .

David, our leader in Tanzania was excellent. He really made our stay in Selous a trip to remember.  The Guide in Stone Town was entertaining, but I doubt his facts.  There was not tour guide in Ras Michomvi as there was no need.

Our local guide, Mrisho for the first week was excellent and very helpful. Our driver guide at Sable Mountain could not do enough to ensure we had a good time. All the staff at Sable Mountain were excellent, and the food was first class. The Dhow Palace hotel was a good and very interesting hotel to stay at. The Stone town tour and spice tour were very good and the guide there Abraham was very interesting.

The transfer at Nairobi on the return trip was poor, we had to queue for 30 mins in a mass of people to get out boarding passes for the Heathrow trip, and they lost our luggage. Overall Kenya Airways was a poor experience.

This is the first time we have used The Adventure Company and overall the experience from selecting, booking and having the holiday was very good. One of the things I particularly liked was in the trip dossier, the travel time of each section was stated, this made it much easier to decided which trip was most suitable for us. We had a great time and will be using The Adventure Company again

The location of Ras Michamvi was a little isolated and not quite what we expected,also it did have the feel of somewhere just starting up for the season, the staff were very helpful thou. just a note in the dossier would help manage our expectations. Sable Mountain and the Dhow Palace Hotel were very good, the standard of the accommodation is one of the main reasons for us to use The Adventure company again.

As we have already said, both Mrisho and Abraham were very good.
