The Annular Eclipse of the Sun
As the moon passes across the face of the sun blocking all but a ring of light around the edge the light levels dim and strange shadows form. The colourful landscape of the South Western States should really be accentuated by this late afternoon event. Viewing eclipses often leaves the observer with a palpable feeling of his place in the solar system.
Monument Valley
Monument Valley is situated in the Navajo Native Americans Reservation. These bizarre red sandstone pinnacles and towers stand tall from the desert floor. Monument Valley is a vast area and is one of the unforgettable landmarks of the great south west.
Arches National Park
In addition to over 2000 natural arches for which the area is justifiably famous this national park has many other striking rock formations scattered over 73,000 acres. The many outcrops standing to attention are like no other landscape on the planet and all set against a backdrop of the snow capped peaks of La Sal Mountains.
Zion National Park
This is a unique landscape of reddish and tan coloured Navajo sandstone. Zion National Park covers 229 square miles with Zion Canyon being 15 miles long and up to half a mile deep. A number of unusual plants and animals can be found in the park, making it a great place to explore on foot.
