Trip Overview:

This diverse itinerary offers you the chance to get up close to the leatherback and green turtles that inhabit the Caribbean coastline of Costa Rica. While staying at the Pacuare Reserve turtle conservation project in Tortuguero National Park you can take part in turtle patrols - protecting the nests, hiding them from poachers and helping to measure and tag the turtles, all of which helps to preserve this fragile ecosystem.

Hands On Adventure

Hands On Adventures combine our special blend of adventure and discovery with an opportunity to ‘lend a hand’ to a local project for an enriching experience. These adventures allow you to contribute to conservation of the natural environment and/or cultural heritage by getting a behind the scenes look at one of our carefully selected local projects.

Turtle Conservation

You'll stay at the Pacuare Reserve near Tortuguero and help monitor and protect the habitat for the endangered leatherback turtle. Accommodation is really basic, similar to camping with shared facilities. You'll share with other like minded helpers and researchers.

Under the supervision of a marine biologist, the beach is patrolled every night by small groups of volunteers, a guide and our beach guards. Each turtle we meet is tagged (if not already tagged), measured and examined for any special features or signs of injury.

If the turtle has already laid, we try to disguise the nest from poachers. If she has still to lay, we may collect the eggs in a bag while she lays and then place them in an artificial nest which we dig nearby and which can be more easily camouflaged from poachers. We also do this when the turtle has chosen to lay too near the sea as seawater will kill the eggs by making the shell non-porous.

Leatherbacks nest around seven times during the nesting season at intervals of about 10 days. They lay about 80 fertile eggs in each nest.

Pacific & Caribbean Beaches

You'll visit both of Costa Rica's coastlines, ending your trip at Manuel Antonio. The national park is flanked on both sides by white sandy beaches and is home to a population of iguanas and monkeys.

River Rafting

World renowned for white water rafting, Costa Rica has many beautiful locations for this kind of excitement. Among the best is the Pacuare River where you enjoy the thrill of rafting whilst travelling through dense, tropical rainforest.

Arenal Volcano

The sound of the volcano can be heard rumbling constantly in the area surrounding Arenal. When cloud cover clears the plume can be seen coming from its impressive peak. Night time is the most spectacular - on a clear night the lava flows can be seen from many, easy to reach vantage points.
