Tunisia is just over a three hour flight from the UK but is like entering another world. It is a fascinating introduction to North Africa and has been occupied by many of the great powers of the past. Starting off with the Phoenicians,then the Romans who were followed by the Vandals. Byzantine, Arab, Ottoman, and French, they all occupied Tunisia before it gained independance in 1956. Tunisia abounds with wonderful historical sites from it's rich past, and on this tour you will have the opportunity to visit many of the highlights and discover the country that the Romans called their "bread basket".

El Djem
In El Djem you will visit the third largest amphitheatre in the Roman world – walk in the footsteps of the gladiators through tunnels under the arena and gain a sense of the atmosphere from days gone by.
Overnight Desert Extension
Trek out into the desert on your very own camel to sleep in a traditional Bedouin style tent. Visit the palmery at Tozeur, a forest of about 10 square kilometres and 200,000 trees amonst which you will find peppers, tomatoes, mandarins and pomegranites growing. A great opportunity to witness the agricultural techniques used in this envirnment on the edge of the desert.
Palmeries and deserts.
Due to its north-south extent,Tunisia has great environmental diversity. The Atlas mountains stretch across the north, extending through from Morocco and Algeria. In complete contrast in the south is the Sahara desert. A wonderfull oportunity to travel through all these geographical features, witnessing the transformation from green fertile fields, through to hot, dry central plains to finally desert. Study the variations of the land and soil and observe how this influences the lifestyles of local people.
