Trip Overview:

The geology of Iceland is unique and very exciting.  This is a dynamic and adventurous trip that visits all the major sites that are of special interest to Geography students; Þingvellir National Park, exhibitions, geothermal areas, black sand beaches, glaciers and a boat trip out to the Westman Islands.

This brilliant itinerary adds a twist of adventure to many of the typical sites.  Instead of simply looking at the rift where tectonic plates meet you have the opportunity to go snorkelling in the crystal clear water of Silfrá fissure with the European tectonic plates on one side and America on the other.  Instead of just viewing a glacier from afar we put on our crampons and hike onto the ice.  We venture into an Icelandic lava cave, explore Geothermal areas, wonder at a town destroyed by an angry volcano and walk behind waterfalls.

This is a new, different and action-packed holiday designed to ignite interest and inspire pupils outside the classroom.

Itinerary:
Day
1
Arrive in Reykjavik

Arrive in Reykjavik

Your trip starts at Keflavik international airport, from where you make the short journey into the centre of Reykjavik where you will be based. In the evening you will be able to see the exciting city of Reykjavik by night, as with the short daylight hours in winter, you will almost certainly arrive after dark! Hotel Cabin (D)

Day
2
Þingvellir National Park

Þingvellir National Park

We start out trip with a visit to the famous Þingvellir National Park (en. Parliament Fields). Þingvellir is a UNESCO world heritage site and the original birthplace of the oldest existing parliament in the world. From a geological point of view it is the place where the tectonic plates of America and Europe meet and the rift valley is clearly visible. To add a twist of adventure to the day we will go snorkelling in the crystal clear water of Silfrá fissure a unique swimming experience with the European tectonic plates on one side and America on the other.  We will also explore an Icelandic lava cave, a great example of a lava tube situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world.  An awe-inspiring example of what volcanic activity can create.

In the afternoon we drive to Gullfoss the undisputed queen of Icelandic waterfalls. Gullfoss is an amazing sight with water rushing down three steps of lava layers with breathtaking power and grandeur. A few minutes down the road is a geothermal area which is the home of the famous “Great Geysir” – a 10,000 year old geyser.  Here the earth gurgles and bubbles while Geysir hurls boiling water 70 metres into the air.

Along the way we will also visit the Kerid Crater a volcanic crater lake. Myrkholt Hut (BLD)

Day
3
Glaciers and Waterfalls

Glaciers and Waterfalls

On the second day we explore the Icelandic south Coast.  First we visit Seljalandsfoss, a stunning waterfall that you can walk behind.  We then venture on to Sólheimajökull glacier where we will put on our crampons and explore the magnificent ice sculptures, crevasses and cauldrons.  This is a brilliant way for students to get up close to and learn about glaciers.  Afterwards we visit the “Eyjaflallajökull Erupts” exhibition and will watch an amazing action video of the eruption that put half world on a hold. We then drive on to the famous black sand beaches and see the amazing rocky formations around the beach.

Then we head to Skógar where we will stay for the night, the Hostel is just next to the stunning 60 meter waterfall Skógarfoss and those who want can walk all the way to the top for a better view. Hostel Skogar (BLD)

Day
4
Hveragerdi Geothermal Park

Hveragerdi Geothermal Park

Today is a brilliant opportunity to study how a community develops around and adapts to its environment.  This geo-park is unique; nowhere else in the world is there a populated region so close to an active high-temperature geothermal area.

The existence of hot springs led people to settle in Hveragerði. The natural hot water could be used for space heating, cooking, baking and laundry and led to the development of jobs.  The first market garden Fagrihvammur, was founded by the Varmá river in 1929. A year later the first greenhouse was build, marking the beginning of greenhouse horticulture in this region.  Horticulture became a key sector of the local economy.

We will have an in-depth tour of the area, learning how the locals make use of these boiling hot springs that erupt in their gardens.  We will boil eggs in the hot springs and those who wish can have a mud foot-bath.

In the afternoon we journey back to Reykjavik, stopping on the way to see the in Helliheið Geothermal Power plant. Hotel Cabin (BLD)

Day
5
Blue Lagoon / Flight home

Blue Lagoon / Flight home

On the way to the airport on our last day we will stop at the Blue Lagoon to soak in the Geothermal Milky waters and relax before our flight. (B)

Þingvellir National Park with an adventurous twist

No Geography trip would be complete without a visit to the famous Þingvellir National Park (en.

Hiking on the Sólheimajökull glacier

The glaciers of Iceland are awe-inspiring.  We bring them to life by taking your students hiking on the Sólheimajökull glacier.  Hiking with crampons on the ice is a major highlight for them and is the perfect way for them to learn about glaciers and how they are formed.  It is also the only way for them to get up close to magnificent ice sculptures, crevasses and cauldrons.

Exploring Geothermal Areas, Waterfalls and Hot Springs

A trip to Iceland wouldn't be complete without visiting the famous geyser region and the impressive glaciers that cover the island. These huge masses of ice move over land and have formed over many years, slowly carving a path through the lanscape. You'll visit the Gulfoss 'Golden Waterfall.

Reykjavik & Blue Lagoon

You arrive into Iceland's capital Reykjavik, where you will admire its rugged surroudings. Then visit the moon-like surroundings of Lake Kleifarvatn and the hot springs and thermal pools. Then on to the Blue Lagoon, where you can swim in the blue waters.

Boat trip to the Westman Islands: Full day exploring the area where a volcano destroyed an entire town.

Today gives the students a brilliant opportunity see firsthand the destruction caused by a volcanic eruption.  We drive from Skógar to the harbour (45 mins) and take a boat out to the beautiful island of "Vestmannaeyjar" or Westman Islands.  The boat trip takes about 30 minutes and there is a good chance you will see seals and puffins along the way and possibly whales if you are lucky.

They say that the Westman Islands are one of the best kept secrets in Iceland; they boast beautiful mountains, active volcanoes and lots of seabirds.  The volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar in 1973 is, without doubt, considered the largest natural disaster in Iceland in recent history. The eruption begun on January 23rd on the island of Heimaey, the only populated island of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. After the evacuation of the inhabitants, and during the 5 months while the eruption lasted, there was much uncertainty as to whether or not the island could ever be repopulated. The eruption destroyed over a third of the town and to this day you can see over 400 homes and buildings covered by lava and ash.  You will have a full day on the Island exploring this unique area.
