Trip Overview:

This trip has exciting and challenging treks to climb Tanzania’s two highest peaks. Venture off the beaten track; the route up the extinct volcanic cone of Mt. Meru (4,566m) is scenic and dramatic, and is the perfect acclimatisation for an attempt on the much higher Kilimanjaro (5,895m).

Mount Meru is an active (but dormant) volcano located north of Arusha in Tanzania. At 4562 metres it is Tanzania's second highest mountain and the fourth highest mountain in Africa. It has become a popular "warm up" trek for Kilimanjaro climbers, dealing with altitude, steep ascent, climb through different vegetation zones over several days. The Mt. Meru crater rim walk is one of the most spectacular and exhilarating walks you can do in Africa. The Machame route is considered one of the most beautiful and leads to the snow-capped summit.

Mt Meru & Mt Kilimanjaro

Your first exciting trek takes you up Mt. Meru, an extinct volcano boasting 4566m. As you ascend you will see its spectacular ash cone and views of Kilimanjaro in the distance. This enjoyable trek has the added bonus of providing ideal acclimatisation for your next challenge – an ascent of ‘Kili’. At 5895m the highest peak of Africa is deserving of its title ‘The Roof of Africa’. As you stand on the peaks of Tanzania’s highest mountains you can savour the breathtaking views – it makes all the effort of getting there very worthwhile.

We include the Park fees in our price, worth US$855

The park fees, which are mandatory, are included in our price. When comparing prices make sure you factor this is in as they are US$855 or £570 per person (depending on exchange rate). It's a daily rate so it varies between trips, broadly speaking it's £49 (Meru) to £74 (Kili) a day. This includes the entrance permit to the National Park, the camping/hut permit within the park and the Mount Kilimanjaro Rescue Fee.
