Trip Overview:

Climbing Kilimanjaro on this route offers a different perspective of the mountain as you approach from the north-eastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya, and the numbers are strictly regulated so you'll get away from the crowds on your ascent. Kilimanjaro routes on this side of the mountain retain a sense of unspoilt wilderness offering a different perspective on Kilimanjaro.

As the route is only used for ascent you’ll descend via Marangu. It’s also the only route with views of the Masai lands, so you might even see monkeys, buffalos and elephants too.

Trip Highlights:
Wildlife viewing
Porter assisted camping
Gradual ascent

Rongai Route

You’ll see fewer people climbing Kilimanjaro on this less trekked route giving you a real sense of discovery away from the crowds. As the only route with views of the Masai lands you’ll have the best chance of seeing wildlife including monkey, buffalo and elephant. This is a fully supported six-day camping trip and offers the most ‘gradual’ ascent of any Kilimanjaro routes.

We include the Park fees in our price, worth US$635

The park fees, which are mandatory, are included in our price. When comparing prices make sure you factor this is in as they are US$635 or £420 per person (depending on exchange rate). It's a daily rate so it varies between trips, broadly speaking it's £74 a day. This includes the entrance permit to the National Park, the camping/hut permit within the park and the Mount Kilimanjaro Rescue Fee.

Drier, less crowded route with slow ascent

The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. This is the perfect route for those who would like a more remote hike, and for those who are climbing Kilimanjaro during the rainy season (the north side receives less precipitation). From the summit glaciers, screes, cliffs, afro-alpine moorland then forests lead down to the cultivated foothills. The Rongai route takes you at a gentle pace through these dramatically different zones.
