Mti Mkubwa Camp (2650m)

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2650m)

After breakfast we meet with our porters and guides and transfer to the Londorossi gate at 2,000 metres. After completing registration procedures, we should be on our way by late morning.

From here we drive along the rainforest track until we reach the trailhead at Lemosho Glades at 2,200 metres ( approx. 45mins ).

The forest track to Lemosho Glades is in poor condition, and vehicles often have to stop short of the trailhead, particularly in wet weather.

From here the trekking begins. It is a 3 to 4 hour walk, ascending quite steeply through the forest, until a camp is made in a forest clearing dominated by a large tree – this is Mti Mkubwa camp at 2,800 metres. Also known as 'Big Tree Camp'.

The night will be spent camping, at much the same altitude. The porters will carry your trek bag with all of your kit, while you’ll carry a day bag with your wet weather gear, camera, lunch and water. Generally speaking, the porters will walk ahead so they can reach camp first and put up your tents prior to your arrival.

Shira Hut 1 (3480m)

After breakfast we head up to the Shira Plateau. From our overnight campsite we will cross a small valley and continue up along a steep ridge, through open moorland. The peak of Kilimanjaro lays straight ahead, an inspiring site on what can be a challenging day’s walk. After around three to four hours the route veers left before flattening out into a gorge, and from here you’ll gradually ascend towards the Shira Plateau.Camp is made by a stream at Shira One campsite at 3,500 metres. Total trekking time today is about 6 to 7 hours.

Shira Hut 2 (3840m)

Today will be a gentle walk east toward Kibo's glaciered peak, and across the Shira plateau which leads you to Shira Camp 2. The camp is located on moorland meadows by a stream. We will use today as an acclimatisation day.

Barranco Hut (3950m)

Barranco Hut (3950m)

Today will be another important acclimatisation day as we will travel up to 4250 metres before spending the night at Barranco (3950m).This is a high altitude desert, offering glorious views of the Western Breach of Kibo. After about four hours the path forks to the right and descends into a gorge (‘barranco’ in Swahili). There’s a fair amount of ‘up and down’ walking today. Turning south-east towards the lava tower known as Shark’s Tooth, you will reach Barranco Hut and your overnight campsite at 3950 metres. With any luck you’ll be treated to a great sunset tonight.

Karanga camp (3963m)

This morning we’ll climb the Barranco Wall (not a technical climb) and then follow the Kibo South Circuit.Expect brilliant views of Kibo's southern glaciers if the weather is clear. There's a pleasant lunch stop by the river in the Karanga Valley. This is a relatively short day, and we should arrive at our camp around lunchtime, located just after the Karanga Valley set atop a ridge.Today will be a valuable acclimatisation day as we’ll be walking for the morning only, ascending and descending various ridges and valleys during your walk.

From Karanga we head up to the intersection of the South Circuit and the Mweka route where we’ll start climbing up a ridge for a further two hours to Barafu Hut, at 4600 metres. You should arrive at Barafu around late lunchtime, allowing plenty of time to rest before the final summit attempt.Barafu is Swahili for ‘ice’ – it can be very cold here at night.

Uhuru Peak (5895m) And Mweka Camp (3100m)

Uhuru Peak (5895m) And Mweka Camp (3100m)

Today will be the longest and most challenging climbing day.

We will be woken at about 11pm. After dressing in all your warm clothing, we have a hot drink and then set off at midnight. The first part of the ascent is on a rocky ridge. This then turns into scree. The surface is loose and can be hard going. On its steepest sections, the path zig zags up the scree. It takes an average of 7 hours to reach Stella Point on the crater rim.

On a fine morning, the views of the sun rising from behind Mawenzi are spectacular. Stella Point is at 5,750 metres. From here, the path goes around the crater rim for a further hour to the summit at Uhuru Peak, 5896 metres.

We then head back down, via the Mweka route, where our tents will be pitched for the last time. The section from Uhuru down to Barafu ( 4 hours) is scree (as on the way up), then we’ll head down through the various vegetation zones, on a continual downhill, into Mweka which is located on the edge of the rainforest area ( 3-4 hours ).

At an altitude of approx 3100 metres, it will be nice to have some 'air' to breathe!

From Mweka down to the park gate, is a 3 to 4 hour walk through the rainforest, which may be slippery in patches. At the gate you can often buy beers (or from the villages on the way back). There’s then just a very short hike to the road head where you’ll be met by the vehicle and transferred back to the hotel for a swim, a beer, and a VERY welcome hot shower! In the morning of Day 10 you’ll be picked up by your private transfer vehicle and driven from our hotel in Moshi to Arusha. After a brief lunch stop (not included), you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight. Any flights out of Kilimanjaro Airport should not be booked prior to 3.30pm.
