Ecosystems and desert environment

Study the causes and characteristics of hot arid lands whilst experiencing Jordan’s 3 distinct regions which are quite diverse but become more harsh and extreme to the south and east. Study how climate, vegetation and landscape changes across the Jordan Valley, Highland Plateau and Badia Desert.

Look at the effects of weathering particularly wind and water erosion and how a seasonal Mediterranean climate with distinct hot/dry season affects landforms, with focus on development of Wadis.  Study the adaptation of flora and fauna to harsh and arid conditions, with strong seasonal rainfall fluctuations.

In Wadi Rum you will see enormous vertical sandstone cliffs shelter narrow gorges, some filled with centuries old inscriptions, whilst erosion has produced impressive rock bridges.

Natural & Ancient Wonders

You approach the ancient Nabatean city of Petra via a narrow siq (gorge), at the end of which the impressive buildings hewn out of solid pink rock are revealed. You have a full day to explore Petra. A night spent under a desert sky is not to be missed. Heading into the wild desert of Wadi Rum you witness towering cliffs and beautiful landscapes before settling in to your Bedouin-style tent. Finish your journey at the lowest point on earth - the Dead Sea –  to float in its saline waters. All this along with ancient castles, biblical stories and Dana nature reserve makes for a fully comprehensive  tour of Jordan!

Settlement & Agricultural land use

During your travelling you may see the black ‘beit ash shar’ tents of the hardy Bedouin who survive by breeding goats, sheep and camels. See the conflict of maintaining the traditional nomadic way of life with the modern ways.

In Wadi Rum you’ll visit a Bedouin encampment to learn how they survive in the harsh environment sampling the lifestyle for yourself as you sleep in a traditional Bedouin tent or under the stars which afford the perfect opportunity to learn about the stars with the Milky Way, shooting starts and satellites all clearly visible.
