Delve into the ancient land of vikings and volcanoes on this 10-day Icelandic adventure. Marvel at geothermal hot springs, witness the steamy eruptions of a giant geyser, touch the tongue of Europe's biggest glacier, see lava that's still warm after 20 years and scale giant waterfalls. Travel through desolate lands so mysterious and ethereal that they have inspired artists, poets and musicians for centuries. The ancient, untamed beauty of Iceland will stay with you forever.
Fly to Reykjavik
Fly to Keflavik Airport and transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik. The world's northernmost capital lies just a whisker below the Arctic circle, sees around four hours' sunlight in the depths of winter, but bathes in 22 or more hours of it in summer. Surrounded by gleaming volcanic peaks and crystalline ocean with a vibrant heart that beats with a wild nightlife, Reykjavik's contrasts are utterly beguiling, beautiful and must be touched, tasted and seen to be believed. Guesthouse (1 nt)
Hvolsvollur
This morning you take a short city tour around Reykjavik, followed by a trip to Pingvellir (Parliament Plaines), the location of the old parliament. Iceland lays claim to the oldest parliament in the world, and this is central to the history of the country.
From here you continue to the Geyser geothermal area and to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, before proceeding to Hvolsvollur. Guesthouse (1 nt)
Kirkjubaejarklaustur
You start day 3 by visiting the waterfalls of Seljarlandsfoss and Skogarfoss, followed by a visit to the museum at Skogar. You continue to Iceland's beautiful South Shore to discover puffin colonies at Dyrholaey, the rocks of Reynisdrangar, and the black sands and lava left by the Laki volcanic eruption of 1782-1783. Guesthouse (1 nt)
Hofn
The trip continues over the black sands towards the oasis at Skaftafell National Park close to Vatnajokull, Europe's biggest glacier. At Skaftafell you take a short walk towards the beautiful waterfall Svartifoss and another walk to the glacier tongue. From there we go to the Glacier Lagoon (Jokulsarlon) where an optional boat tour between the icebergs is highly recommended. Guesthouse (1 nt)
Egilsstadir
Continue along the beautiful eastern coastal region. We drive through the mountain pass Almannaskard and admire the extraordinary colours of the mountains. You will stop at Stodvarfjordur where we will visit the museum of stone. Guesthouse (1 nt)
Myvatn
From Egilsstadir you go over mountain roads to the magnificent waterfall Dettifoss, one of Europe's mightiest waterfalls. From there you visit the natural phenomenon Asbyrgi. Then continue towards the town of Husavik and end the day with a visit to the "Waterfall of the Gods" (Godafoss). Guesthouse (1 nt)
Hrutafjordur
On day 7 we stay around the Lake Myvatn area. It is one of the most interesting geological and geographical areas of the northern hemisphere. Volcanic activity both recent and ancient has shaped the landscapes and the forces of nature are still at work. Among the interesting sights are a solfatara area with boiling and bubbling mud pots, the Krafla Geothermal Power Plant, the lava at Leirhnjukur still warm 20 years after it flowed, the lava labyrinth Dimmuborgir and the pseudo crater group at Skutustadir. Guesthouse (1 nt)
Snaefellsnes
Today your trip continues around the Snaefellsnes peninsula and its magnificent glacier Snaefellsjokull - made famous by the 1864 novel 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' by Jules Verne, in which a passage leading to the centre of the earth is discovered on on Saefellsjokull.
Among places that you visit are the rural church at Budir, Arnarstapi, where a short stroll along the coastal cliffs gives us access to the rich bird life and other wonders of nature. At Djupalonssandur, a short stroll takes us to the basaltic pebble beach, framed with strange lava formations and a glacier visible in the background.
Reykjavik
On day 9 you head towards Reykjavik to complete your circuit. First stop is at the old volcano Grabrok where we take a walk to the top. There you continue to Hraunfossar (Lava Waterfalls) and Barnafossar (Children's Waterfalls). Then you go to Husafell for our lunch break. From Husafell return to Reykholt, the place where Snorri Sturluson, the famous 13th century poet, lived and wrote. Then you will visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's hottest spring. From there the tour goes directly to Reykjavik through the Whale fjord (Hvalfjordur).
Tour ends
This morning the trip ends, you transfer to the airport and fly home
Glaciers and Geysers
A trip to Iceland wouldn't be complete without visiting the famous geyser region and the impressive glaciers that cover the island. These huge masses of ice move over land and have formed over many years, slowly carving a path through the landscape. You will also visit Skaftafell National Park close to Vatnajokull, Europe's biggest glacier.
Volcanic Scenery
Iceland is renowned for its stunning volcanic scenery. During your visit to Lake Myvatn you will get the chance to Marvel at lava flows in Leirgnjuker that are still hot 20 years after they first flowed and to visit Dimmuborgir. This area is composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations and is one of Iceland's most popular natural tourist attractions.
Waterfalls
Iceland has a plethora of waterfalls and perhaps none as magnificent as the Golden Waterfall in Gulfoss. Other waterfalls to note along your trip as well though include Seljarlandsfoss and Skogarfoss.
