Cairo, Luxor and Aswan

Your trip starts in the bustling metropolis of Cairo, where you will be amazed by the imposing Pyramids at Giza. In the Egyptian Museum, discover Tutankhamun's gold mask and other relics that avoided the clutches of grave robbers. The world famous Aswan dam was proclaimed an engineering miracle in the 60's and still, to this day, provides irrigation and electricity to the whole of Egypt. In Luxor stand in awe of the magnificent temples and the fascinating Valley of the Kings.

River Nile

Using the Nile as case study this trip offers a fantastic insight in water management practises and the use of technology to manage the harsh climate conditions (wet/dry season) which increases the need for Drainage systems, irrigation and flood control. Sail on the Nile in a traditional felucca and witness the stark contrast between the fertile banks and desert only a short distance away.

Settlement & Agricultural land use

The development of Nubian settlements and their migration over time provides an example of how land use has evolved including the changes to various sites, locations and their function.  Contrast the types of agricultural land use of the Nile valley ‘black lands’ and fertile floodplains bordering the Nile.
