Reviews
Don't take our word for it - read through our customer reviews. All of these have been published without any editing. This is very difficult to answer as the trip was so varied - the cloud forest was amazing, the Caribbean coast was superb, the Pacific reserves and beaches were excellent and the flora and fauna out of this world. I think it's fair to say that there was one highlight - the entire trip!
John Bridges, March 2010
The holiday exceeded our expectations. The white water rafting & zip wires were exhilarating; the river boat trips and walks in the cloud & rain forests gave us great views of plants, birds, mammals and other wildlife and we even saw the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. Our guide Sergio was excellent, being both helpful and extremely knowledgeable. This was our first time with this company but it will not be our last.
[Least enjoyed] Only the international flights with Iberia who were poor.
We thought the holiday was a perfect mix of activities.
Most of the accommodation was in scenic locations and well located in relation to the places of interest e.g. National Parks.
He was an amazing Leader and we gained so much by having a local guide which so much experience and knowledge of the places we visited.

Our trip was made particularly memorable to due to our guide in Costa Rica. Having a local guide is so essential to make sure we get the best out of a touring holiday. Sergio was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and he clearly enjoyed making our trip a fantastic experience.
The flights were particularly disappointing. We accept that delays may happen but the attitude of the Iberia staff was less than sympathetic when we missed our connection. We then experienced cabin crew that did not show any interest in their passengers. Additionally, the turn around time between flights is too tight in Madrid. Due to the size of the airport this means that you have to run to the transfer gate but even then any slight delay means that you don't have time to make the connecting flight.
I would like to say that we had a truly fantastic holiday. It was a good balance of adventure, culture and nature and we have come back knowing a lot more about Costa Rica and the environment. We will definitely consider booking with the Adventure Company again.
I would like to say that most of the places we stayed were excellent. The only reason I have marked my score down slightly is that there were a couple of places where frustratingly not everything worked in the room but this is only a minor comment.
I have previously commented that our guide was excellent and made our trip truly memorable.

We loved Costa Rica, so many highlights, enjoyed every minute.
[Least enjoyed] Iberia airlines
All the accommodation was better than expected, great locations and the smaller hotels/lodges were great
Sergio was excellent, could not have had a better guide

I thought that the experience, once in Costa Rica, was outstanding overall. Costa Rica Trails provided an excellent guide (Sergio) with great knowledge who cared for the enjoyment of the group. All of the stops were excellent; the accommodation ranged from satisfactory to excellent and was entirely what we expected. However, our experience with Iberia Airlines cast a shadow over the trip for which The Adventure Company must take some blame; the international connection at Madrid was just unrealistic. I blame myself for not picking it up before I paid the deposit; once I realised the problem, the Adventure Company merely stated Iberia policy - the connection time was sufficient for the airline. For future reference, you must advise clients of your intention to book flights with such tight turnarounds before you book them; I am well versed in missed connections and, given the choice, I would have elected to arrange my own flights at a slightly higher price. As it was, coupled with other circumstances beyond our control, I was condemned to an outward transit experience of approximately 60 hours - it didn't say that in the brochure!
Outstanding trip, great guide. A very good overview of Costa Rica, its environment, wildlife and culture. It is a beautiful country.
A downside is the amount of driving, but this is well stated in the itinerary and the driver (Salvador) allocated to us by Costa Rica Trails was excellent and helpful. He and our guide, Sergio, worked well together to enhance our group's experience and enjoyment.
A good range of accommodation that ranged between 2 and 3 star.
Outstanding.

Absolutely fantastic trip and our guide Sergio was brilliant!
The only issue I had was with the very short transfer time between flights at Newark airport. I have contacted yourselves seperatley regarding this matter.
Sergio helped make it a brilliant trip even though we were a very small group with only two people travelling seperately on it

Wildlife, white water rafting and an excellent guide.
[Least enjoyed] Four flights to return to the UK
Highlight that for two days you will require only a rucksack with clothing for those days.
[William] Superb

So many! The trip easily exceeded my high expectations - the accommodation, sites visited, activities included were all great. The wildlife and scenery were simply incredible - enhanced by glorious weather.
None of the above could have been appreciated without our wonderful guide Ricardo - he was everything a guide should be and more - an encyclopaedic knowledge of everything natural, cultural and historic, a great sense of humour, passionate about nature and as excited about many of the sightings as we were. He led many early morning birding walks, was flexible with the itinerary to meet the desires of the group and made what would have been a great trip into a truly memorable one.
[Least enjoyed] Arenal volcano - trip notes talk of its roars and pyrotecnic displays but it hasn't done any of this for over a year, apparently. This was a surprise and disappointment to all of the group. I needn't have taken my tripod along! Would be sensible to alter the trip notes here.
Could have happily stayed in all the main locations another day or seven. The internal plane transfer is a very good alternative to other tours' repeat of the boat ride. The undocumented bits that were worked in were very special, but I presume not all guides are as accommodating as ours was.
[Accommodation] Hard to classify it all by star - somewhere between 3 or 4 would be more appropriate as they varied a little. But all at least very good.
The Monteverde hotel was the plushest but least appealling of them all - would be better off not using this hotel in my opinion (and plenty more in the region).
His knowledge of his country was great. As a naturalist, his expertise as a guide everywhere from morning rambles to the rainforest, mountains and the rivers was incredible. We didn't use local guides, apart from on one night walk, as we didn't have to!
Well fluent in English, good sense of humour and an excellent communicator. He went out of his way to accommodate the group's combined interests and enhance the holiday.
I'm gushing a bit and it's a bit unusual for me to be quite so enthusiastic in my praise of a tour leader - but it really is impossible to overstate the how good Ricardo was.

Highlights were white water rafting, which was spectacular, visiting various reserves showing us the diversity of Costa Rica's flora and fauna and seeing the country and it's people through the eyes of our guide.
The itinerary was well paced leaving us with sufficuent time between activities to rest and enjoy our surroundings, but not too long that we got bored waiting around.
William's enthusiasm and love of Costa Rica rubbed off on us immediately and we all embraced this beautiful country as we realised that every Costa Rican felt the same as William. It was wonderful to see how they respected their flora and fauna and everywhere was so clean and loved

Rafting and viewing of wildlife. As Imentioned in thankyou to guide on behalf of all group there cannot be anyone in central America who knows more about the fauna and flora of Costa Rica than our guide Denis Willie. He also had the ability to present it in a very interesting way.
Alredy mentioned. Outstanding knowledge and I'm a biologist!
Too much time travelling between sites.
Naturalist - Dennis - was awesome.
Dennis is awesome!!

The highlight of the trip was a visit to Tortuguero National Park and traveling through the waterways with our awesome and knowledgeable guide to see so many animals plus the white water rafting in the Pacuare River.
Our Group Leader - Dennis - was fantastic. He was witty and friendly and open to all our questions. His knowledge on flora and fauna was absolutely immense and he also has a strong personal interest in wildlife especially birds. He really made the holiday for everyone in the group, fantastic experience and nothing was too much trouble for him. Highly Recommended AAAAAA+++++!!!!
