Trip Overview:

Due to recent clashes between Philippine armed intruders from the Sulu archipelago, and Malaysian security forces in the eastern Sabah region, the Malaysian Government have declared the region of Eastern Sabah (including Sandakan) a Special Security Zone. There is currently no news on how long this may last for.

Due to risk, we will not be travelling to the Eastern Sabah region for the months of March and April.

Alternative itinerary

Days 1-3 remain unaffected

Day 4: Return to Kota Kinabalu, and visit the Rasa Ria Orang-utan Sanctuary to check out these cheeky critters. The sanctuary houses the orang-utans until they can be released back into the wild. Our next stop is the Mari Mari Cultural Village, where we interact with the ‘locals’ and learn the historical and traditional life of different ethnic communities in Sabah.

Day 5: The morning is free for you to explore Kota Kinabalu. Perhaps check out the Central Market, or grab a massage. This afternoon we cruise down the Garama River on a wildlife spotting expedition, searching for proboscis monkeys. We watch the fireflies dance as dusk sets in, before sitting down to a local dinner.

Day 6: We head out to the Kota Kinabalu wetlands this morning, to learn about the environment and to spot passing birds and butterflies. Later on, we had to the Sabah Museum for an insight into the fascinating history of Sabah. Tonight, after a day of exploring, we settle down for a delicious buffet dinner.

Days 7-10: Revert back to original itinerary

Please note the order of these activities may change due to availability.

When the situation improves and is deemed safe we will revert to the original itinerary, depending on availability of services.

In this tropical jungle adventure you will encounter some amazing wildlife - including of course, the endearing, playful orphaned Orangutans of Sepilok, which will no doubt steal a place in your heart, and the somewhat distinguished looking Proboscis Monkeys. Take a river safari for more wildlfie viewing through the jungle. Discover local tribes with a unique culture, therapeutic hot springs, scenic mountains and local villages. All together this trip gives you a great combination of natural and cultural delights many of which are totally unique to Borneo.

Go Ape in the Jungle

For most the highlight on this trip is to visit the orphaned Orangutans at Sepilok. You will no doubt fall in love with these endearing orange apes as they swing playfully through the trees to reach their feeding station for a tasty meal of milk and bananas. Rather more distinguished, but just as endearing, are the proboscis monkeys who also make their home in the jungle forests here. From a river boat safari you may be lucky enough to spot these apes in their wild habitat too.

Mountains & Tribes

Majestic Mount Kinabalu is one of the world's highest non volcanic mountains - and it's still growing! The area around the mountain is filled with an enormous range of orchids, ferns and colourful birds waiting to be discovered. A jungle canopy walk will give you an upclose view of this impressive natural region. In the far north you meet a primitive tribe who live in traditional longhouses and have a chance to learn about their ancient cultural ways.

Manukan Island

The aim of the game here is to simply relax and enjoy your surroundings. Serene bveaches and crystal waters are common to see and this really is the perfect setting for a couple of days of pure tranquility.
