Yacuma School, Chontayacu Village, Ecuador
Operations Manager, Graham Bishop was delighted to receive a recent invitation to visit the community of Chontayacu, Ecuador. There he had the pleasure of attending the inauguration of a new village school that the Adventure Company donated US$3400 of the US$12000 it cost to build it. The lack of government funding had meant there was previously no teacher available for this community and the old school building was in a state of complete disrepair. Children were travelling 3 hours a day by foot and paddle canoe to another school across the Napo River, a large tributary of the Amazon. In close partnership with our local agent in Ecuador who is paying the salary of a teacher for the children, the new school opened on 26th February with lots of dancing, national anthem singing and speeches!
Uniforms for Indian Primary School
Over the last year we have been working very closely with our local agent in India to provide financial support to schools we visit in our itineraries. During 2007, we donated £1465 with the aim of spending the money in the best possible way by benefiting those children who need it most. We are delighted to say that we spent the money providing new uniforms for 82 primary school children in Betalghat as well as financing the construction of a much needed boundary wall for a school playground. We visit the schools we support in our itineraries and passengers travelling on one of our December departures were able to distribute the new uniforms to the children themselves. For 2008, money kindly donated by passengers to the Adventure Company Foundation will benefit a school for disadvantaged children with speech and hearing disabilities.
