Plan International

Plan International

Plan International UK works with some of the world's poorest children, in countries where one out of five die before the age of five, and those who survive often go hungry and have no chance of learning to read or write.

Plan sits down with these children, their parents and the community to plan practical ways to provide all the things we take for granted, so that together they build schools, drill wells, train health workers and help families support themselves.  Plan seeks to ensure that children are actively involved in the decision-making process, working with adults who have learnt to value their contribution. This work is possible because a million people across the world sponsor a child with Plan and, in doing so, benefit many other children and entire communities.  The aim is that when Plan leaves 10-15 years later the children have a better start in life, know their rights and have the confidence to claim them for the next generation. Their energy can provide the impetus to change their world.

For a monthly fee, sponsors are linked to a child and family in one of the 45 countries where Plan is working, with the opportunity to exchange letters and receive regular reports on their progress and that of their community.  Sponsors will also receive information about their sponsored child’s country and culture.

Sponsorship donations are used for development work, helping families and communities to lift themselves out of poverty and improve the quality of life for their children.

How we are working with Plan

When you return from your holiday you will receive a leaflet explaining about the work of Plan and inviting you to sponsor a child.  If you are interested in doing this before you travel, or know of someone who might like to sponsor a child, call Plan or visit their website, details shown above.
For every passenger that travels to Peru we make a £5 per passenger financial donation to a Plan project in Lima and Cusco.  The project addresses one of the most basic and pressing needs in these areas - the provision of latrines in homes and schools. Poor sanitation leaves communities, and especially the children, vulnerable to a high prevalence of infectious diseases such as cholera and typhoid. Helping to build latrines in people's homes and schools, and providing them with training and education on hygiene practices, reduces the chance of adults missing work and children missing school due to illness.  If clients choose to make a donation to the latrine project we will match their donation up to a maximum of £10 per person.
