Overnight flight to Delhi

Overnight flight to Delhi

Upon arrival you’ll be transferred to your hotel in the capital. At 1:00pm there will be a welcome meeting with your leader. India's capital is an exciting, busy and often chaotic city, but it's also one of the most interesting places in the world, with historical sites from different eras, museums and galleries, shops and endless bazaars. After the meeting you'll head out to see some of the sights of Old Delhi. You'll combine modern modes of transport with the more traditional, as you first jump on the metro before hitchng a ride on a rickshaw through the chaotic streets. During the tour you'll visit the Jama Masjid, India's largest and oldest mosque and arguably one of Delhi's most impressive buildings. To arrive at Jama Masjid you’ll drive past Chandi Chowk, once an imperial avenue of Mughal Royalty which today is the busiest commercial area of the city. Enjoy a walk through Chandni Chowk to savour the ambience of an oriental bazaar and test out your bartering skills! You'll then head to the Sikh temple Sheeshganj Gurudwara to learn about the Sikh religion. Hotel – 1 night

Shimla

Shimla

You’ll arrive in Kalka at about midday and will board the Himlayan Toy train, the ‘Himalayan Queen’, for a scenic journey which will take you through the Shivalik ranges to Shimla. Your bus will simultaneously drive with you carrying your luggage and you can do part of the journey by train & part by bus if you find this more comfortable. You should arrive in Shimla late in the afternoon and will transfer to your hotel. Shimla – Queen of Hills – used to be summer capital of during British rule in India. It is at a height of 2200 meter above sea level. As the Summer Capital of the British in India, Shimla was the country's focus for the better part of every year and now, is the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. Today, it has well developed facilities, easy accessibility and numerous attractions making it one of India's most popular hill resort. Situated in the lower ranges of the Himalayan mountains, it is surrounded by pine deodar, oak and rhododendron forests. Towards the north lie the snow-covered high-ranges, while the valleys breathe whispering streams and swaying fields. Within the town are host of splendid colonial edifices, quaint cottages and charming walks. Shimla offers a variety of shopping, sport and entertainment activities. You’ll take a guided tour visiting the Indian Institute Of Advanced Studies, Sankat Mochan Temple and Jakhu Temple before a final free afternoon where you’ll have the opportunity to stroll in the famous Mall Road – great for sourcing pottery items, jewellery and handicraft products & ‘The Ridge’, a wide open space used for summer festivals which leads to Lakkar Baazar, a wooden crafts market. Manali

Manali

The Manali region has a distinct culture in terms of the houses, people and attire which is noticeably different from the rest of Himachal Pradesh. There will be a lot of driving today (approximately 12hrs including stops and traffic), however, the journey will be broken up with a visit to Kullu. On the banks of the Beas River in the Kullu Valley, this town is famed for its shawl making industry. You’ll continue your journey to the hill station of Manali, surrounded by towering peaks. The following day you can experience the beauty of the small town, once the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh. In fact, it’s got the highest concentration of Tibetan refugees in the entire Kullu valley. Buddhism is prominent here and the town is known for its many gompas. The area is also a very popular spot for hiking and trekking route and to get a flavour of this, you’ll enjoy some short walks in the local vicinity. Hotel – 3 nights (Bx2)

Solong Nallah

Solong Nallah

Today, you’ll be transferred by vehicle to the Sollang Nallah. Thereon you’ll walk along the right bank of Beas river through villages, green fields and orchards with beautiful valleys, forests & mountain view to old Manali village. Your walk will cover 11 km with very slight gradual inclines and declines and will take approximately 5 hrs, dependent on the weather conditions and the pace of the group. (B)

Dharmshala

Dharmshala

Another long drive is necessary to day – you’ll cover 245km and the journey to Dharmshala will take about 8hrs, however, your trip will be broken up by a visit to a Tibetan settlement & monastery at Bir and visit temple at Baijnath before lunch. After continuing and completing your journey, you arrive in Dharmshala where you’ll check in to your hotel. Dharamshala is a small hill station lying on the spur of the Dhauladhar range about 18 kms north east of Kangra town. Hill station is wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow capped mountains enfold three sides of the town while the valley stretches in front. The town of Dharmshala is divided into two distinct parts. Lower Dharamshala has civil offices and business establishments with courts, Kotwali Bazar and Upper Dharamshala compose of places with names which bear witness to its history like McLeod Ganj and Forsythe Ganj. Since 1960, when it became a temporary headquarter of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Dharamshala has risen to international fame as "The Little Lhasa in India". You’ll spend a morning sightseeing around Dharamshala. Visit the Dalai Lama's residence and if lucky, an opportunity of an audience with him at Mcleodganj where a large Tibetan population now lives. The waterfall of Bhagsunath is also within walking distance from here. You’ll spend some time in the Tibetan colony and visit their local market & temples and you’ll also have a whole day at leisure to spend as you please. Hotel – 3 nights (Bx3)

Armitsar

Armitsar

You’ll start today with a morning drive to Amritsar,the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion (210kms & approximately 5hrs). On arrival, you’ll check at your hotel. The rest of the day will be at leisure to relax after your journey. The following morning you’ll be taken sightseeing around some of the famous sites in Amritsar. One of which is the Golden Temple - the sacred Sikh sanctuary spread out in a vast complex around a huge water tank in the midst of which stands a marble sanctum where the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth is reverently placed. The roof of the sanctum is gold-leafed. The community kitchen provides free meals to up to 10,000 pilgrims or visitors in a day. You’ll walk by the busy bazaars of the city, visit the historic Jallianwalah Bagh where General Dyer’s bullets killed hundreds of innocent Indians and later visit the Durgiana Hindu temple which looks like a replica of the Golden Temple. Later on in the afternoon, you’ll visit the border town of Wagah to see the change of guard ceremony. It is a spectacle comparable to 'Change of Guards' in London. The pomp and pageantry of the Beating Retreat and the Change of Guard within handshaking distance of the Indian and Pakistani forces makes for a most charming spectacle. Hotel – 2 nights (Bx2)
