Bangkok
Take an overnight flight to Bangkok. After your arrival this morning, you transfer to your hotel and check in. Your welcome meeting is at 18:00 hours and you will meet your group leader and the rest of your family group then.
Bangkok is full of sights and wonders; with its many temples and busy street markets it’s not a city any adult or child is likely to forget in a hurry and certainly gives you that feeling that you just landed into another world.
Nouvo City Hotel (AAA) - 1 night - Swimming Pool
Overnight train
This morning you take a city tour of Bangkok. The afternoon is then free for your own exploration of this exciting city.
Later board a comfortable overnight sleeper train to the pleasant northern city of Chiang Mai (approx 13 hours journey). Dinner and drinks can be bought on the train, but most people prefer to buy a selection of local dishes from the numerous stalls in and around the station, and have a picnic dinner on board. The train is quite comfortable - sheets and pillows are provided and curtained bunks provide some privacy. Children usually love this journey!
Overnight train - 1 night (B)
Chiang Mai
Early in the morning you arrive in Chiang Mai - the Rose of the North - where the slower pace of life is immediately evident. You’ll be met at the station, and transfer straight to your hotel to shower and freshen up. You will visit the Theravada Buddhist temple - Wat Phra That Doi. The rest of the day is left free to wander at your own pace and soak up the atmosphere of this lively city, surrounded by impressive city walls. Later you can spend the evening at the night market which is teeming with interesting sights and smells. There are lots of freshly cooked delicacies to choose from for dinner tonight.
Chiang Mai is the most important of Thailand’s northern cities, with a history dating back to the 13th century and beyond. For 200 years the city was under Burmese control and much evidence of this period remains in both the architectural style of many buildings and in some of the rice and soup dishes found in local restaurants!
The following day you are free to explore on your own and the kids will no doubt want a dip in the hotel pool. Later in the afternoon its time for a culinary experience second to none - you will visit the local market and buy some produce and take your items to a cookery class where you will learn to cook some fabulous local dishes. Just imagine the fantastic dinner party you can hold on your return home. You will eat dinner here from your efforts after the class - we are sure it will be delicious!

Chiang Khong
Today you travel to Chiang Khong (approx 4 hours journey). On arrival there is free time. This town is an important market town for hilltribes in the region and for trade with northern Laos. The town is very remote, but has a lively feel. Across the river lies the official entry point to Laos.
Teak Garden Hotel (AAA) - 1 night (B)
Pakbeng
Today you travel by local transport to the Thailand/Laos border. You will say farewell to your Thailand group leader today. A new group leader from Laos will escort you across the border. Once in Laos you join a private boat at Ban Houaysai and cruise on the Mekong River to Pakbeng stopping at local villages along the way you can take some refreshment and get an insight into village life here. Pakbeng is a major stopping point for river boats in the region. Kids might like to try some Laos sweets such as coconut jelly or fried bananas which can be found in the stalls here.
Santisuk Guesthouse (AA) – 1 night (B)
Luang Prabang
Today you make a full day journey by boat to Luang Prabang. By the time the Mekong reaches Laos from its source high on the Tibetan plateau, it has run nearly half its total length of 4200km. Here it is calmer and begins a long, slow meander a further 1600km south to Khong Island near the Cambodian border.
Your boat stops at Pak Ou Caves, near the confluence with the Nam Ou River. This Buddhist holy site is reached by a staircase cut into the limestone cliffs. Once inside the caves you are confronted by a multitude of Buddha statues in all styles and sizes. Many of these are thought to be more than 400 years old and were brought here for safekeeping when Luang Prabang was under threat from the Ho Chinese.
Later you arrive in Luang Prabang, the erstwhile royal capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage site and transfer to your hotel.
New Daraphet Villa (AAA) – 3 nights (B)
Luang Prabang
The city is perhaps at its best in the early morning, when the mist that drifts in from the Mekong River shrouds its monuments before being burnt off as the sun gathers strength. This morning we set out on foot to Wat Xieng Thong, probably the most beautiful of Luang Prabang’s temples. Seen from the outside it is lovely enough, but inside is a staggering array of mosaics crafted from Japanese glass and sumptuous gilt decoration with spires and finials in the form of oriental dragons. In the exquisite Royal Palace (now the National Museum) you’ll see the royal quarters which have remained untouched since the royal family left in 1975. The palace survived the fighting which took place unharmed and in the following year was converted into a museum after Crown Prince Sisavang Vatthana handed it over to the government. It now houses a collection of Buddha statues dating from the 15th - 17th centuries and a rich display of religious artefacts. This afternoon you'll have the chance to climb mount Phousi, which dominates Luang Prabang's skyline, topped by a glittering golden stupa. The views across the city are marvelous, particularly at sunset. (B)
Luang Prabang
Today you'll take a drive south for (about an hour) to reach the Kuang Si waterfalls. Starting from high up on a hillside, there are several cascades up to 50 meters in length. Some pools are available for swimming and you'll also have time to explore the surrounding jungle too. You'll be able to walk up to the top of the falls to take some snaps of the beautiful turquoise pools surrounded by lush greenery. (B)
Phnom Penh
Farewell to your Loas group leader today as you transfer to the airport for your flight to your next destination of Cambodia. After a short flight you arrive in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. This afternoon you take a tour by cyclo and will visit the spectacular Silver Pagoda, which houses the Emerald Buddha, the colourful Royal Palace and Tuoi Sleng a museum dedicated to remember the genocide that took place here. The Tuoi Sleng museum is situated in the old school building which was used by Pol Pot and the Kymer Rouge regime as a secret security prision, during their rule between 1975 and 1979, it is a stark reminder of the atrocities commited here with over 1 million people being killed.
The next day you will take a visit to the Killing Fields where you learn more about the tragic history here. Visit the Russian Market which is brimming with items for sale from hardware to handicrafts and antiques. The afternoon has been left free for you to explore the city at leisure. There are many hidden corners of this charming city for you to explore. You could perhaps take a walk along Sisowath Quay for cameo views of the city. Alternatively, we recommend a very special visit to the Apsara Foundation, whose aim is to educate poor Cambodian children to become professional dancers and musicians, simultaneously conserving Cambodian arts and culture. There's also the opportunity to undertake a traditional cooking class too (optional).

Siem Reap / Angkor Wat
This morning you leave Phnom Penh and make the 315km journey by road to reach Siem Reap travelling by public bus. Non-stop the drive takes around six hours but you’ve all day to make this journey and can expect to stop en-route at Skuon, a village where fried spiders are sold on the street as a delicacy, and the town of Kampong Thom, before continuing on to reach Siem Reap. Here you’ll check in to your hotel for the next three nights.
Angkor Holiday Hotel (AAA) - 3 nights - Swimming Pool (B)
NB: the authorities at Angkor Wat require all visitors to produce a passport photograph in order to combat the use of fake entrance tickets. Although photos can be obtained on the spot, for your convenience we recommend you bring two passport photos per person with you for this purpose.
Siem Reap/Angkor Wat
The following two days are set aside to discover Angkor - arguably the zenith of human ingenuity in Indo-China. You have a three day entrance pass which allows you to visit as you please. The sprawling site of Angkor was built between the 9th and 12th centuries, when Khmer civilisation was at the height of its time.
On your first day your exploration of this wonderful place, you’ll visit Angkor Thom, Bayon, Bophuon, Terrace of Elephants, Leper King, Ta Prohm and Royal Palace today. There will also be free time to explore at leisure during your stay and more wonderful chances to enjoy spectacular tropical sunsets over the temples.
The following day you travel to Banteay Sri a 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva which lies approx 16 miles outside of the main temple areas. Built of red sandstone which lends itself to the elborate carvings that still remain today, it is often know as "precious gem" and is much loved by visitors to Angkor.
The afternoon is free, you may like to take a boat tour on Tonie Sap Lake, known as Cambodia's great lake it is the largest body of freshwater in South East Asia. The lake provides 75% of Cambodia's fish supply. (Bx2)
Fly home via Bangkok
This morning is free for a last look at the temples if you wish. Then later take a flight from Siem Reap to the Thai capital Bangkok, where the trip ends for Land Only clients. Those on group flights board your onward overnight flight home. (B)

Laos and Cambodia are still developing their tourist infrastructure and, although we make arrangements in advance, sometimes amends to the itinerary as a result of changing flight schedules or other local operational conditions may be unavoidable. We are sure you’ll find travelling in Laos and Cambodia an extremely rewarding and fascinating experience, but hope you’ll appreciate that a certain amount of unpredictability is, on occasion, an inherent part of journeying through these wonderful countries.
