The two other families who came with us on the trip were great. We all got along really well, we children were all the same age and had a laugh.

Satisfactory

Vesuvius and the Green Grotto

[least enjoyed] The Sorrento part- accomodation and other arrangements were poor

The accuraccy of information was good in parts and downright misleading elsewhere. In particular there were no pools at any of the hotels and this was a key feature for me/ my son. Some of the itinery indicated poor local knowledge- our guide, thankfully, was great and 'adapted' the itinery to our benefit. This trip was of a noticeably poorer quality than those I have had in the past with the Adventure Company. I book with the Adventure Co. as my experience has been it sources unusual and sometimes wonderful places to stay- the star rating isn't the point as long as it's clean and and all the basics are in place. This year the places were not wonderful- felt like a package holiday where I could have done better booking accomodation myself.

We were lucky with David- he was friendly, helpful and adapted the itinery to meet our needs, which was key to enhancing some parts of the holiday.

Great group leader

Friendliness and helpfulness of our guide and that fact that he wanted to make sure we enjoyed our holiday - very knowledgable. Having other children of a similar age really made the holiday great for my children.

[Least enjoyed] No swimming pools at some of the hotels (which the children would have appreciated).

Having a kind, helpful and knowledgable group leader makes the holiday much more enjoyable.

Pompeii and Vesuvius

The visit to Pompeii and Vesuvius were better than we could have imagined although there were special moments all through our trip.

The itinery was reorganised by the tour leader as it worked much better the way she did it, in an ideal world we would have been able to see the the Archaeolgical Museum in Naples after we had visited Pompeii but this would have been very difficult to have achieved.

Glenda was the difference between this being a good holiday and an excellent one, she anticipated all potential problems, arranged alternative activities when necessary and ensured that we had a hassle free experience. She was worth her weight in gold.

Outstanding guide

Our guide Elisabeth was outstanding and made the trip quite magical for my grandchildren. Can't praise her enough!

A brilliant itinerary

As I said earlier, Elisabeth made our holiday. She was outstanding in her attention to detail, local knowledge, friendliness and fun. We all loved her.

Herculaneum was fantastically preserved and our guide really brought it to life.

Herculaneum was fantastically preserved and our guide really brought it to life.
Our Group Leader Davide always went the extra mile and managed to arrange with a restaurant owner a football game for his family versus Dads and Lads on an astro turf pitch which was in a walled garden of a church with fabulous views over Sorrento. This wasn't on the itinerary but will certainly be remembered along with the other trip highlights of Vesuvius and Pompei.

Naples itself is pretty grubby and intimidating when walking at night with kids.
The itinerary which we had booked changed without prior notification which was very disappointing i.e. - we were not staying on a farm in Sorrento just apartments .Plus the website said there was a pool in the hotel at Capri which we thought would be great for kids after dragging them round museums and ruins. They were so disappointed when the hotel didn't have this after getting excited with the other kids about swimming/water polo. You really need to sort this out as we had a similar experience in Kenya last year when we were meant to be staying in a camp and ended up in another lodge.

Our Group Leader Davide was a real star. He always went the extra mile and he really made the trip.
He was obviously embarrassed that the holiday expectations for all families had been changed and organised extra thing such as football games etc for the kids. He was knowledgeable, fun and a fantastic organiser.
If he had not been there I think there could have potentially have been a mutiny.
He deserves a medal.

A varied and interesting holiday but could have had more activities for children

The beautiful views, lovely surroundings, our happy kids and the kind people who worked at the Agriturismo near Sorrento, for the last three days of our stay. The food was consistently good, wherever we went.

Mario, our tour leader was kind and hard working and obviously cared about the group. We found that there was a cerain amount of inflexibility inherent in the itinerary and there were no other options made available if people didn't want to follow it. For instance, for the the Herhulaneum and Pompeii trips, the group had to follow a guide and both lasted 2 hours - quite a long time to expect kids to be interested.

Mario managed to co-ordinate the group's use of public transport reasonably well (we found this was a good way to get closer to the country and have a fuller experience) although he seemed to find it stressful at times (perhaps understandable, when there are sixteen people to look after).

For us there should have been greater emphasis on ways to walk short distances rather than using a bus - we were aware that, for instance there might have been a way to walk to Sorrento from the agriturismo

However special note should be made of the fact that Mario managed to get our daughter's Swingball set back, which we'd left on a minibus. He was also great with the kids, playing football (table and real), and eating with us on the last three days of our stay. He also negotiated a reduction in price for swimming at a nearby hotel's pool.

Ask plenty of questions of your tour guide. Make sure you budget for eating out alot or opt for street food for your lunch. Explore the footpaths and seafront near the agriturismo. Walk from Marina Piccola to Capri town and down to Marina Grande. Ride the chairlift up from Anacapri to Monte Solaro or walk up following the stations of the cross. Be aware you have to pay to use the swimming pool at the nearby hotel in Capri (although it is a lovely pool). Check out the roof terrace at the Hotel Naples where you stay the first two nights (great views) and the Hotel Transatlantico on Naples' seafront next to Castel dell'Ovo.
