Thimpu
On arrival you will transfer to your hotel in Thimpu (approx 1 hour). Free time to relax and settle in. Thimpu became the capital city of Bhutan in 1961, cars have only existed in the streets since 1962 and the city is the only capital in world without traffic lights! There is a split system in the city where upper lane shops close on a Tuesday and lower lane shops close on a Wednesday, which ensures everyone gets a day off. The 1990s showed the first major increase in the populations, but the city still has a unique character. The majestic fortress of Tashichhodzong (translated as "the fortress of the auspicious religion"), built in 1641 and reconstructed in 1962, is an unmistakeable land mark - it is the king's office as well as the place where parliament sits. You will explore the city and visit the Folk and Heritage Museum and well as the National Library with its priceless collection of Bhuddist manuscripts. Visit the Memorial Chorten with its striking golden spire, it is was built in 1974 in honour of the present king's father and is now the focus of daily prayer in the city. The local people will spin one of the large red prayer wheels and then proceed to the adjacent shrine for their prayers. There is also a chance to buy local handicrafts. Hotel - 2 nights (BDx2 Lx1)
Punakha
Today you travel onwards to Punakha (approx 4 hours drive), the drive is scenic passing through forests of maple and blue pine as you climb to Dochu Pass (3100m) which is known locally as a holy place, inhabited by many spirits. If the day is clear you can see great views of the Bhutan Himalayas. As you descend the vegetation changes, you will stop enroute and walk into the forests to identify some local plants including rhododendrons, fir, cypress and hemlock. Later in Punakha you visit the Chimi Lhakhang or "temple of the divine madman", here you learn of Lama Drukpa Kunley and his eccentric Bhuddist views often with strong sexual overtones. The next day you visit Khamsum Yueling Temple to the north, after an hours walk you reach the temple on a hillside. Enjoying the countryside you can visit some farmhouses and have a picnic lunch beside the river. Later explore Punahkha Dzong (fortress) perhaps Bhutans most impressive Dzong which is located in a serene and traquil place where two rivers converge. Most travellers find this a very memorable experience. Hotel - 2 nights (BLD)
Gangte
Onwards today to Gangte (approx 2 hours drive). Here you visit the extensive Gante Goemba which is an impressive 450 years old and has recently been restored to something of its former glory. Then you explore on foot with a nature walk in the Phobjikha valley (approx 2 hours walk). Hotel - 1 night (BLD)
Paro
Drive back to Paro today (approx 6 hours) arriving late afternoon. The town's main street was only built in 1985, it runs beside the Paro Chhu River. The following day visit Ta Dzong originally a circular watchtower built in 1951 to protect from Tibetan invaders, it is now in use as the National Museum housing art, weaponary, religious thangka, and other historical relics. From here you walk downhill to visit the Paro Rinpung Dzong, "fortress of the heap of jewels" this is a magnicifent fortress-monastery, built at the same time as Ta Dzong, now serving as the civil and religious offices of the Paro Valley with 200 monks in residence. Finally today visit the ruins of the Drugyal Dzong, destroyed by a fire in 1951 the ruins are interesting including a false entrance which cleverly lured invaders into an enclosed courtyard.
Trekking to the Taktshang Monastery is a great highlight of this trip, you walk up to the view point (approx 1 hour) climbing upwards through pine forest and fluttering prayer flags. Known as "Tiger's Nest Monastery" the monastery clings to a sheer rock face dropping 900 m to the valley floor below. You climb up through pine forest and fluttering prayer flags. Stop for lunch at the cafeteria here and continue to the monastery itself. NB Entrance to the monastery requires a permit, on the rare occasion that this is not granted you will not be able to enter the monastery. After a good look around you will take you time to make a slow descent. Back in Paro visit the Kyichu Lhakhang one of Bhutan's most sacred temples, it was one of 108 temples which were built to subdue demons. This is your last organised visit in Paro and any additional time is free for you to explore further or buy some handicrafts. Hotel - 2 nights (BLD)
