Kota Kinabalu

Arrive and make your way to your hotel, the rest of the day is free to relax.  King Park Hotel (Subject to change as with all the hotels listed below) - 1 night

Day
2/3

Mt Kinabalu

Onward to Mt Kinabalu today (approx 3 hours drive). Here you can visit the Kundasang Warm Memorial commemorating World War II veterans and local people who helped POWs. This site also marks the starting point of the tragic Sandakan Death Marches. 2,400 POW's were forced to walk through the jungles of Borneo. By the end of the march, only six Australian escapees survived.

Mt Kinabalu sits at 4095m within a national park of the same name, it is the highest point in Borneo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first in Malaysia. The National Park is a biological wonder with over 800 species of orchid, 600 species of ferns and 326 species of birds. You will walk along the trails and hopefully discover some of these species for yoursef.

A short drive then (approx 45 mins) takes you to Poring Hot Springs. A suspended walkway takes you high into the canopy of great views of the mountains and jungles in this National Park. Visit the Orchid and Butterfly Gardens or walk to Kipungit Waterfall and take a refreshing fresh water dip. Then take a relaxing soak at the Hot Springs. The springs are known for their therapeutic properties and the waters with their sulphuric minerals are reputed to ease aching muscles. Sabah Tea Garden Cottage - 2 nights (Bx2)

Day
4/5
Sepilok

Sepilok

Today you drive (3.5 hours) to Sepilok arriving late evening where you will have an amazing wildlife experience at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the orphaned creatures here are being prepared to return into the jungle. Today there are 60 to 80 orangutans living free in the reserve. In the wild, orangutan babies stay with their mothers for up to six years while they are taught the skills they need to survive. The Centre was set up to help re-introduce these charming primates back into the wild after having been orphaned or living a life of domestication.A buddy system is used to replace a mother’s teaching. A younger ape will be paired up with an older one to learn the skills they need. Another aid to their rehabilitation is the feeding platforms on which bananas and milk are placed twice a day. From the viewing platform you'll be able to watch as they swing into view on ropes and vines to eat.  Human contact is minimised as they are destined to return to the wild, but you are close enough to get great photos and enjoy the fun! You will also visit the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary and see these unqiue long nosed creatures close up. They look rather like wise old men as they laze in the sunshine. Nak Hotel - 2 nights (Bx2)

Day
6

Sukau

Today you journey to Kinabtangan River, (approx drive 2.5 hours) stop enroute to see Black Cave in the Gomantong sytsem of caves famous for their edible nests which are used to make birds nest soup. Harvesting of nests has been a long standing tradition but is now restricted by a license system to ensure their survival. Reaching your jungle lodge on the Kinabatangan River, you are now in a forest reserve which contains a high concentration of wildlife. Later this afternoon a river cruise will allow you to see some of this wildlife - with possible sightings of crocodiles, organutans, proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, hornbills and if you are really lucky a wild elephant. Myne Resort - 1 night (B, L, D)
