Marrakech

After your flight, you transfer to your first night’s accommodation in Marrakech and check in. Even today, the name Marrakech conjures up images of scenes from the Arabian Nights: alleyways, souks, stalls and markets. This remarkable city, dating from the 11th century, never fails to satisfy the curiosity of adventurous travellers. It has everything from the graceful architecture of the renowned Koutoubia Minaret which dominates the skyline, to the wonderful throbbing atmosphere of a medieval fair in the great open square, the Djemaa el-Fna, at the heart of the medina. Hotel - 1 night

Aroumd

Aroumd

Driving out of Marrekech (approx 2 hours) you reach the mountain village of Imlil. A 1 hour trek supported by mules takes you to the peaceful village of Aroumd where you stay tonight in a family run mountain home or gite. The rest of the day is free to explore the village and it's surrounding farmlands.  Another trek (approx 4 hours return) will follow a pilgrims trail to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch where this medieval saint is burried. Gite - 1 night (BLD)

Day
3
Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou

Journey today across the Atlas Mountains (approx. 4 hours / 240km) - rising to a height of 2260m at the Tizi-n-Tichka pass. From here you drive to Ait Benhaddou, one of the best-preserved fortified kasbahs in the country. With its dramatic walls of red earth and slit windows, this is a magnificent example of a stronghold. Ait Benhaddou itself sits upon a lofty pinnacle of rock overlooking a river. Dating from around the 15th century, its importance as a trading post gradually dwindled, and today’s inhabitants eke out a living from farming the meagre soil. However, because of its beauty, it has been used as a setting for several recent Hollywood films including Gladiator. Guesthouse - 1 night (B)

Day
4
Zagora

Zagora

Driving southwards (approx 5 hours) you stop in Ouarzazate the film capital of Morocco where classic productions such as Lawrence of Arabia were filmed. Make a visit to a project to assist local disabled people. Then continuing through the lush Draa Valley you reach the palmerie town of Zagora which is referred to as "doors of the desert". Here you rest for the night.  Hotel - 1 night (B)

Day
5

Sahara Camp

Driving along Jbel Tadrart Mountain ranges through seas of sand with an occassional oasis you reach Tamegroute a historic settlement for religious scholars dating back to the 11th century. We visit an intriguing library and discover ancient scripts and stories of the prophet Mohamed. At the town of M'Hamid you take a camel ride through the dunes before heading deeper into the dunes on 4wd vehicles. Our camp is made at the Erg Chigaga dunes a vast sea of sand swept by the wind into a variety of shapes that form this classic desert landscape. Camping simply in nomad style your day ends with a hearty feast and lots of star gazing. Nomad Camp - 1 night (BD)

Day
6
Taroudannt

Taroudannt

Your journey continues (approx 6 hours) taking in more desert scenery. Keep your eyes out for the peculiar sight of tree climbing goats that seek a tasty meal in the nut producing argan trees. A long travel day is completed with a chance to relax by your hotel pool and take a therapeutic hamman or massage. Riad - 1 night (B)

Day
7/8

Essaouira

After a morning visit to the market town of Taroudant with its markets and Berber traditions, you head out west to the coast. It is a scenic drive (approx 4.5 hours) with much of it hugging the stunning coastline. Essaouira is one of Morroco's most attractive coastal cities. The wild waves of the Atlantic crash remorselessly onto the rocky coastline of this old pirate’s hideout. Portuguese, Berber and French battlements encircle the maze of narrow lanes with tiny cafes looking out onto small squares. Two fortresses look out over the ocean and on an offshore island stands another even larger castle. As befits a seaport, the pace of life is more relaxed here, and the whitewashed streets lend a truly Mediterranean air to the city. We recommend a stroll around the lively old port that is full of colour and interest. The early morning is the best time when fishermen can be seen bringing in their catch or mending their nets. Whilst the Atlantic Ocean is not the warmest for swimming there is an expansive beach which you can relax on. You could walk along to the crumbling castle at the end of it – reputably the inspiration for Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Castles made of Sand’.  Riad - 2 nights (B)

Day
