Zanzibar onward to Saadani
Today you will meet your group at Zanzibar airport and connect to Saadani NP. Arriving in Saadani airport you will transfer to your first night’s accommodation. Your destination is Saadani National Park lying on the side of the Indian Ocean. You are free to relax on the beach, or go for a wildlife walk. Saadani Lodge - Tented bandas (AAA) - 5 nights
Saadani National Park
Bordering the park, your fixed tents are beautifully situated on the beach, with a bar and restaurant. Nearby there's the small local village of Mkwaja as well as the historical ruins of an early mosque. This morning you will enjoy your boat safari on the Wami river. A great opportunity to get a close look at hippos and crocodiles and a real feast for bird lovers. After a pack lunch you 'll jump into your safari jeep for an afternoon game drive, with great wildlife spotting. (B,L,D)
Saadani National Park - elephant & turtle project
Today after a briefing about elephant and green turtle project and swahili lesson for the keen ones, you will meet the collaring team of researcher and get a lecture on the conservation work being done. You'll then head to the field and observe elephants behaviour. (BLD)
Saadani National Park - Turtles hatching
This morning is dedicated to nature walks around the lodge or mafui creek canoe. This afternoon, learn about the Green Turtle project in Madete Marine Park. During the peak season period of July to September you will get 50% chance of witnessing turtles hatching. If so, you might be required to assist with turtles reaching the sea if our experts feel that there is a real threat to the path of the turtles. This is a sensitive topic that is monitored strictly. In the event that yous miss an actual hatching, they will still get to visit the breeding beach and be shown the nest and signs of turtle activity. Whether turtles or not, drive to our Saadani Tower for fantastic night on the animal-filled salt flats. Pax will do night drive after sundowner drinks watching wildlife from the tower and then dinner (BLD).
Saadani National Park
Early morning foot safari across the salt flats, then you can enjoy a well well deserved breakfast while watching th wildlife from the tower. The rest of the day is free and you have different activities on option, you can eather stay at the lodge and have a wonder on the beach. This afternoon there may be an opportunity to visit the nearby local school – Mkwaja Primary School. The teacher is used to our visits and an impromptu football match often takes place. It’s a great place to interact with the local villagers and to see their way of life. (BLD)
Fly to Zanzibar
Today you transfer back to Dar Es Salaam to depart for Zanzibar by light aircraft. You will disembark and transfer to your hotel on arrival (15 minutes). As a result of its trade in slaves and spices, Zanzibar was for many years the most important town on the East African coast. The Sultans of Oman, who introduced the clove tree to its fertile soil at the start of the last century, moved their court here from Muscat in the Gulf and ruled until independence in the early 1960s. As a major trading centre, the 'Spice Island' is also reputed to be the birthplace of Swahili, the simple lingua franca that developed to allow trade between people of different languages. In the heart of the original merchant city the baleful cry of the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer resonates though the narrow stone streets.Dhow Palace OR Tembo Hotel (AAA) – 2 nights - Swimming pool - (B)
Today explore the atmospheric, faded splendour of Stone Town. As you wander through the narrow, whitewashed streets, watch out for the bustling old fish market, the vibrant colours of the stalls in the fruit market, and the evocative mix of veiled women and men in white pillar-box hats. (B)
Today your tour end at your hotel after breakfast. You may want to extend your stay for a few night on the pristine white sand beach before to head home. (See Extension section) (B)
