Fly to Zanzibar onward to Saadani

Today you will fly overnight to Zanzibar and connect to Saadani NP.

Arrive at Saadani

Arrive at Saadani

Arriving in Saadani you will transfer to your first night’s accommodation called Tent With a View. Saadani National Park  is the only coastal  wildlife park in East Africa located on the Indian Ocean. Depending on arrival time you are free to relax on the beach, or go for a nature walk within the grounds.

Tent with a View - Premanent tented bandas(AAA) - 5 nights

Saadani National Park

Saadani National Park

Bordering the park, your fixed tents are beautifully situated on the beach, with a bar and restaurant. A 30 minute walk away is the small local fishing village of Mkwaja. This morning you will enjoy a full day out by boat and safari vehicle. A boat safari on Saadani's Wami River is a great opportunity to get a close look at hippos and crocodiles and a real feast for bird lovers. After a packed lunch you'll jump into your safari vehicle for an afternoon game drive, with great wildlife spotting. At some point on safari, you will learn how to set a camera trap.(B,L,D)

Saadani National Park - elephant & turtle project

Today after a briefing about the Saadani elephant project run from the lodge and the Saadani green turtle project the kids will have a swahili lesson before  you all receive a great talk about current consrvation work taknig place. A late afternoon game drive will follow in search, particulary of the Saadani elephants.  (BLD)

Saadani National Park - Turtles hatching

Saadani National Park - Turtles hatching

This morning you will walk up to the beach to the local fishing village of Mkwaja where you can experience colourful local village life and maybe even play football with local children. After lunch, relax on the beach, take a nature walk around the extensive lodge grounds or maybe go on a canoe ride on the lodge's Mafui creek. If t here is some turtle activity, you will visit the Madete marine park in Saadani instead of Mkwaja village and learn about the Green Turtle projet. During the peak season period of July to September you will get 50% chnace of witnessing turtles hatching. If so, you might be required to assist with turtles reaching the sea if our experts feel thatthere is a real threat to the path of the turtles. This is a sensitive topic that is monitored strictly(you cannot see nests and unless the turtles are hatching, there is nothing to see except an empty beach).

Late afternoon, drive to The Roof of Saadani (an amazing 20 metre tall viewing tower) and experience views of the park and ocean. Spend an exciting night on the animal-filled salt flats.  You will take a night drive after sundowner drinks before dinner or spot wildlife from the crow's nest (BLD).

After an early morning foot safari across the salt flats, you can enjoy a well deserved breakfast at the Roof. The afternoon is at leisure at the lodge. There are optional activities on offer or simply wander down the beach or have a swim.

Fly to Zanzibar

Fly to Zanzibar

Today you depart for Zanzibar by light aircraft. You will disembark and transfer to your hotel on arrival (15 minutes). As a result of its trade in slaves and spices, Zanzibar was for many years the most important town on the East African coast. The Sultans of Oman, who introduced the clove tree to its fertile soil at the start of the last century, moved their court here from Muscat in the Gulf and ruled until independence in the early 1960s. As a major trading centre, the 'Spice Island' is also reputed to be the birthplace of Swahili, the simple lingua franca that developed to allow trade between people of different languages. In the heart of the original merchant city the baleful cry of the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer resonates though the narrow stone streets.

Dhow Palace or Tembo Hotel (AAA) – 2 nights - Swimming pool - (B)

Stone Town

Stone Town

Today explore the atmospheric, faded splendour of Stone Town. As you wander through the narrow, whitewashed streets, watch out for the bustling old fish market, the vibrant colours of the stalls in the fruit market, and the evocative mix of veiled women and men in white pillar-box hats. (B)

Overnight flight home

This morning after breakfast you transfer to Zanzibar airport to board on your overnight flight home. (B)
You may want to extend your stay and relax for a few nights on the pristine white sand beach on the East coast.(See Extension)
