Arrive in Reykjavik
Your trip starts at Keflavik international airport, from where you make the short journey into the centre of Reykjavik where you will be based. In the evening you will be able to see the exciting city of Reykjavik by night, as with the short daylight hours in winter, you will almost certainly arrive after dark! Hotel Cabin (D)
Þingvellir National Park
We start out trip with a visit to the famous Þingvellir National Park (en. Parliament Fields). Þingvellir is a UNESCO world heritage site and the original birthplace of the oldest existing parliament in the world. From a geological point of view it is the place where the tectonic plates of America and Europe meet and the rift valley is clearly visible. To add a twist of adventure to the day we will go snorkelling in the crystal clear water of Silfrá fissure a unique swimming experience with the European tectonic plates on one side and America on the other. We will also explore an Icelandic lava cave, a great example of a lava tube situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world. An awe-inspiring example of what volcanic activity can create.
In the afternoon we drive to Gullfoss the undisputed queen of Icelandic waterfalls. Gullfoss is an amazing sight with water rushing down three steps of lava layers with breathtaking power and grandeur. A few minutes down the road is a geothermal area which is the home of the famous “Great Geysir” – a 10,000 year old geyser. Here the earth gurgles and bubbles while Geysir hurls boiling water 70 metres into the air.
Along the way we will also visit the Kerid Crater a volcanic crater lake. Myrkholt Hut (BLD)
Glaciers and Waterfalls
On the second day we explore the Icelandic south Coast. First we visit Seljalandsfoss, a stunning waterfall that you can walk behind. We then venture on to Sólheimajökull glacier where we will put on our crampons and explore the magnificent ice sculptures, crevasses and cauldrons. This is a brilliant way for students to get up close to and learn about glaciers. Afterwards we visit the “Eyjaflallajökull Erupts” exhibition and will watch an amazing action video of the eruption that put half world on a hold. We then drive on to the famous black sand beaches and see the amazing rocky formations around the beach.
Then we head to Skógar where we will stay for the night, the Hostel is just next to the stunning 60 meter waterfall Skógarfoss and those who want can walk all the way to the top for a better view. Hostel Skogar (BLD)
Hveragerdi Geothermal Park
Today is a brilliant opportunity to study how a community develops around and adapts to its environment. This geo-park is unique; nowhere else in the world is there a populated region so close to an active high-temperature geothermal area.
The existence of hot springs led people to settle in Hveragerði. The natural hot water could be used for space heating, cooking, baking and laundry and led to the development of jobs. The first market garden Fagrihvammur, was founded by the Varmá river in 1929. A year later the first greenhouse was build, marking the beginning of greenhouse horticulture in this region. Horticulture became a key sector of the local economy.
We will have an in-depth tour of the area, learning how the locals make use of these boiling hot springs that erupt in their gardens. We will boil eggs in the hot springs and those who wish can have a mud foot-bath.
In the afternoon we journey back to Reykjavik, stopping on the way to see the in Helliheið Geothermal Power plant. Hotel Cabin (BLD)
Blue Lagoon / Flight home
On the way to the airport on our last day we will stop at the Blue Lagoon to soak in the Geothermal Milky waters and relax before our flight. (B)
