Fly to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)

Fly to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)

On arrival after your overnight flight to Ho Chi Minh City, you will be transferred to your hotel, where you will have the rest of the day free to relax until the welcome meeting with your leader at 6:00pm. Please ask at the hotel reception where this meeting will take place. Ho Chi Minh city is the largest city in Vietnam, with a population of just over six million people. This huge number of inhabitants, all rushing about their daily lives gives the city a dynamic atmosphere. It is characterised by a vast array of sights and sounds; ancient pagodas, mosques and cathedrals sit squarely up against the former Presidential Palace, War Museum , historic Dong Khoi Street and the bustling markets of Ben Thanh and Cholon (Chinatown). Much of the life of the city takes place on the busy streets, which are lined with stores, shops, stalls and vendors with their wares spread out on the footpath selling everything from soup to sophisticated electronics! Hotel - 1 night

Day

Mekong Delta

Mekong Delta

You leave Saigon this morning for an exploration of the Mekong Delta. En route you will visit the Vinh Trang Pagoda and at Vinh Long you'll board your private boat and set off for your cruise through the maze of waterways. The delta covers an area of over 65,000 square kilometres and is known as Vietnam’s rice bowl. Tourism is relatively undeveloped here and travelling amongst the canals and rice fields offers a fascinating insight into the day to day life of the local villages and homesteads. Pausing to visit some local cottage industries along the way is a great opportunity to learn more about how people live here, before finally arriving at your overnight homestay stop. Homestay - 1 night

Please note that accommodation tonight will be basic. You will be sleeping on fold-out camp beds in a dorm-style sleeping area. Bedding and mosquito nets are provided and there are shared bathroom facilities (cold water only)

Day
4/5
Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City

The sounds of the delta starting to come to life act as your wake up call this morning and you rise early to enjoy a simple breakfast. Boarding your boat once again, you'll visit the famous floating markets en route to Cai Be. You then return to Ho Chi Minh City via the famous Viet Cong hideout known as the Cu Chi tunnels. It’s likely that your guides were once soldiers here and their insight will help you to understand this tragic part of Vietnamese history. Some tunnels have been widened to accommodate foreigners - more than a touch of irony here! The network is made up of over 250km of tunnels and at it's height stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border. Parts were several storeys deep and included countless trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and even cinemas and kitchens!

Taking a minibus, you'll then set out to explore the city on a comprehensive sightseeing tour, visiting the War Remnants Museum and the twin-spires of the Notre Dame Cathedral, before having te rest of the afternoon free to do some additional sight seeing, shopping or simply relaxing. This evening you will board your overnight train to Nha Trang, so you might like to use your free time to stock up on fresh bread, fruit and water for the journey.

Conditions on the train are basic, but they add to the adventure and are one of the best ways to travel long distances with the locals. You will usually be in four-berth compartments (occasionally six-berth depending on availability), in which there are bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, blanket and pillow are all provided, but you should be aware that although every effort is made to keep the group together, you may find yourself sharing a compartment with locals and people of different genders. Hotel - 1 night  Overnight train - 1 night

Day
6/7
Nha Trang

Nha Trang

Your train will pull into Nha Trang station this morning and you will disembark to find yourself in one of Vietnam's most attractive and charming coastal towns, featuring a harmonious combination of mountains, islands, sea and sand. The rest of the day will be fairly laid back so that you can take it easy after the train journey. In the afternoon you'll take a minibus around the town and it's surroundings so that you can get your bearings.

The next day you'll board a boat for a trip to the nearby islands, where you'll have a chance to swim and snorkel in the warm waters. Nha Trang is famous for it's fresh seafood and you'll find out why when you are treated to a delicious meal of the days catch on the deck of your boat. Back on land, you can browse the local arts and crafts that are sold around town. In the evening you can go out to experience some of the nightlife. Hotel - 2 nights

While in Nha Trang you will stay in a centrally located three star hotel, which has comfortable twin and double rooms, air conditioning and a restaurant.

Day
8-10
Hoi An

Hoi An

After taking a midday flight to Danang, you’ll make your way to Hoi An. After a brief orientation tour around this ancient town, you’ll be free to spend the afternoon at leisure. This little town is one of our favourites and we are sure you’ll love it too! Walking and cycling is the best way to soak up the atmosphere, so why not rent a bicycle and take a trip to the nearby Cua Dai Beach.

The rest of your time here has been left free and we are sure you will find plenty here to entertain yourself! Hoi An is also one of the best places to shop for souvenirs, especially if you’re looking for T-shirts, paintings or ceramics. For those interested in getting clothes tailored, this is definitely the place to shop. Hoi An is famous for a variety of culinary specialities, like Cao Lau or White Rose. If you can bring yourself to get up early, a visit to the wonderful local market is a must to watch the animated shoppers haggling over fresh fish, spices and vegetables. There are many things to do besides shopping and your Group Leader will of course be on hand to advise and help make arrangements.

You may also wish to take an excursion to the little visited My Son complex. Hidden for many years by dense jungle, the temples and towers of My Son are now designated a World Heritage site and make for an intriguing day of discovery. Alternative activities also include boat rides on the Thu Bon River or taking a bike ride into the surrounding countryside. Hotel - 3 nights

Your accommodation in hoi An is located near all of the attractions of the Old Town and has lovely twin and double rooms, all have private facilities and air conditioning and the hotel also has a pool, restaurant and bar.

Day
11/12
Hue

Hue

Leaving Hoi An, you drive to Hue via China Beach and the spectacular Hai Van Pass, an incredibly scenic stretch of road, with spectacular views of Lang Co Beach, where you stop for lunch.

Founded as a royal city in 1687, Hue is the gateway to the treasures of Vietnam's royal past. Today the city remains one of Vietnam's major tourist attractions, with the magnificent architecture of the citadels, palaces, royal tombs, temples and pagodas built under the Nguyen Dynasty attracting visitors from far and wide.

Arriving in the afternoon, you'll have some time to freshen up before taking a tour of the Imperial Citadel, including entry into the Forbidden Purple City, which was almost totally destroyed during the American War's Tet Offensive. The foliage-covered ruins are still very atmospheric and the gaping holes left by the bombs give an idea of the destruction wrought upon the country during the war. You'll also visit the Museum of Royal Relics, where royal robes, furniture, ceramics and weaponry give an interesting insight into the life of the country's former rulers.

The next day if not in festival time enjoy a dragon boat cruise on the Perfume River, before visiting Thien Mu Pagoda, considered by many to be the unofficial symbol of Hue. It is an active Buddhist monastery and dates back to 1601. One of the most poignant displays is a car that belonged to a former monk, who drove into Saigon in 1963 and set himself alight to protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. Later on you'll pay a visit to the majestic royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, with its central lake set amid a grove of frangipani and pine trees. If time allows, you may also be able to visit what many believe to be the most majestic royal tomb of all, that of Minh Mang. Hotel - 2 nights#

Your modern hotel in Hue is loocated on a quiet street near the centre of town. The clean and spacious rooms have ensuite facilities and air conditioning.

Day

Hanoi

Hanoi

Leaving Hue, you make for Hanoi, the gateway to Northern Vietnam. The former capital of the Ly Dynasty, when it was known as Thang Long (Soaring Dragon), Hanoi has developed into a modern cosmopolitan city. With Chinese and French influence in the architecture and layout of the city, it is a delightful place to visit. Today you will visit the Temple of Literature, which was Vietnam's first university, built in 1070 and the Fine Art Museum, to see it's collections on contemporary arts. This evening you jump in a minibus and head through the ancient '39 streets', where you'll discover an incredible selection of shops selling everything from souvenirs to exquisite silk clothing, beautifully embroidered tablecloths and CDs. You'll also be treated to a famous water puppet show, unique to Vietnam and best seen in Hanoi, followed by an optional dinner at a local restaurant. Hotel - 1 night

In Hanoi, your fully equipped hotel is centrally located near the historic Old Quarter. It has both twin and double rooms with private facilities and airconditioning. The hotel also has it's own restaurant and bar.

Day

Halong Bay

Halong Bay

For breakfast this morning, you head to the KOTO restaurant. As well as serving up delicious meals, it is a project dedicated to training street children and disadvantaged youths in hospitality skills, so that they will be able to get jobs in the industry.

Leaving Hanoi, you journey across the Red River Delta to the coast (approx. 4hrs) and beautiful Halong Bay - whose name means ‘descending dragon’. You’ll board a boat for a cruise in this stunning bay, marvelling at the 3000 limestone peaks that emerge from the sea. Lunch will be served as you cruise around some of the thousands of dramatic limestone islands that can be found in this unique World Heritage Site. You have the opportunity to visit spectacular caves crammed with stalactites and stalagmites and, weather permitting, to swim from your boat.

Tonight you will truly experience the tranquility of the bay as you spend the night on board your private boat. The sailing junk has twin bed cabins that are all air conditioned and have provate facilieits. There is a dining room and bar on board. Cruise Boat – 1 night (BLD)

Day
15
Hanoi

Hanoi

After breakfast on the boat you make the return drive to Hanoi. On the drive back to the capital you’ll visit some villages en route, where lovely locally made blue and white ceramics are made and can be purchased.

This afternoon is left free for you to explore at leisure. The French brought more than just architecture to the country and Hanoi has a buzzing café-society - a relaxing way to spend an hour or two is to wander along the tree-lined avenues to one of the cafés alongside Hoan Kiem Lake and enjoy the view towards Ngoc Son Pagoda. If you fancy some last minute sightseeing, then why not pay a visit to Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and house, before regrouping for a farewell dinner. Hotel - 1 night

Nb. Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum is often closed for renovation for a period between the months of September to December, however, Ho Chi Minh's house on stilts is usually still open to visitors at this time.
