Bako NP

Bako NP

Today you'll drive to Kampung Bako (approx. 1hr) where you board a local boat to Bako NP. As the oldest national park in Sarawak, Bako features lush rainforest, abundant wildlife, jungle streams, waterfalls, interesting plantlife, secluded beaches and trekking trails. Millions of years of erosion have created a coastline of steep cliffs, rocky headlands and stretches of white sandy bays. Wave erosion at the base of the cliffs has carved many of the rocky headlands into fantastically shaped sea arches and stacks, with colours patterns in the rock that have been formed by iron deposits. You will enjoy walks through pristine jungle trails, each is different and offer intriguing insights into the island's botanical diversity. Weather-permitting you will hit the trail that will take you to the beautiful beach at Telok Pandan Kecil (5km/3hrs). Alternatively, if you are still tired from the flight, or feeling more energetic and adventurous, there are plenty of other trails of differing lengths. Look to the trees as you walk to try and spot quirky probiscus monkeys. Guesthouse - 1 night

The accommodation in the guesthouse is dormitory style, with multi-share facilities.

Kuching

You will have some free time first thing this morning for you to hit the trails once more and take in the magical atmosphere of the park. You'll then return by boat to Bako village and then by minibus to Kuching. En route you will visit the Semengoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where you'll take a walk into the jungle to watch the Orangutans being fed. Hotel - 1 night

Sarakie

Sarakie

This morning is an early start to get to the Rajang River for the express boat to Sarikie (approx. 4h). Rich with local life, the Rajang River is always busy and provides and interesting insight into the lives of people who are dependant on it every day. On arrival in Sarikie, you will have the chance to visit a local market before continuing by minibus to Iban Longhouse (approx. 1.5hr) where you will be welcomed by the Iban people.

In the afternoon you will get a guided trek through the jungle to the beautiful waterfalls where you can even have a refreshing dip. In the evening, you will be treated to a traditional dinner and warrior dance and learn about the Ibans amazing history and culture and hear about their fascinating headhunting stories.

Reputed to be the most formidable headhunters on the island of Borneo, the Ibans of today are a generous, hospitable and placid people. Because of their history as pirates and fishermen, they were conventionally referred to as the "Sea Dayaks". Longhouse - 1 night (D)

Accommodation in the longhouse is very basic. Bathroom facilities are shared and cold water.

Day

Sibu

Saying goodbye to your new Iban friends, you will drive to Sibu where you can freshen up and relax. Venture into the market in the evening to sample the local delicacies. Hotel 1 night (B)

Day

Mulu NP

Mulu NP

Fly to Miri and on to Mulu and spend two full days exploring one of the most dramatic parks in Asia. Gunung Mulu National Park is one of Nature's most spectacular achievements and the 'jewel in the crown' of Sarawak's expanding network of national parks. Hidden underneath the forested slopes of these mountains is one of the largest limestone cave systems in the world and you'll head out on the afternoon of your arrival to visit the Deer Cave. Home to millions of bats, at sunset they emerge like an enormous plume of smoke for their night-time feed, and hopefully you will be lucky enough to witness this.

The next day you'll set out to visit Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave, which contains Asia's longest underground river (approx. 5hrs), and hike through the jungle to Camp 5 (approx 8.5km), your base for your trek up the Pinnacles Trail. You rise early to start the ascent. It is a tough and adventurous climb but the spectacular views from the top are more than worth it. Although you do not need any technical climbing experience, you will need a good level of fitness. Some passengers find this trek extra demanding as it uses fixed ropes and ladders on steep gradients and the trail is often uneven. If you decide to opt out of the trek then Camp 5 is a great place to spend the day, swimming in the river or relaxing and soaking up the jungle atmosphere. Multi Share - 1 night, Open Air dorm - 2 nights (Bx2, Lx2, Dx2)

At Camp 5 you will sleep on mats on raised open-air platforms in a mixed gender dormitory. Bathroom facilities are shared and showers are cold water. Bedding is not provided so you will need to bring your own sleeping sheet and a warm layer for cool nights.

Day
10
Limbang

Limbang

In the morning, walk the ominously named Headhunters' trail (11.3km/5hrs), historically used by warring parties. The trek is through dense jungle along a well-defined, mainly flat track, although the way can be muddy during the rainy season. You'll also have to cross some streams, many have bridges but some have to be waded through, so be prepared to get your feet wet. You'll stop midway for lunch, before continuing on to the Terikan River. Jump into a traditional longtail boat and be whisked downriver to Limbang (approx. 4hrs)  Hotel - 1 night (BL)

Day
