Quito
This morning is free for you to relax following your flight. In the afternoon you head out with a local guide to explore the colonial heart of the city. Quito has spread along a valley sandwiched in by volcanoes. The old colonial section has some fantastic buildings and churches, and from the foot of the angel on top of the Panecillo hill you get a fantastic view across the city. You continue out from Quito to the Mitad del Mundo (centre of the earth) monument. This marks the spot that in 1736 Charles-Marie de la Condamine declared to be the equator, according to his measurements. It is possible to see how water drains clockwise on one side of the equator and anti-clockwise on the other. (BL)

Nenkepare; community welcome
First transfer to the airport for your flight (30 mins.) to Coca, the gateway to the Oriente, Ecuador's Amazon basin. You'll then drive for approximately 2 hours through jungle scenery to the Shiripuno river. Following a safety briefing about the jungle experience you head up river by morotized canoe. The boat trip is guided and you'll get a thrilling introduction fro your naturalist guide. Soon you'll enter Huaorani territory and reserve, land protected for the people.
It is afternoon by the time you arrive and a welcome committee from the community will be waiting to mark your arrival into the forest. This will be a chance to meet the Huaorani for the first time and introduce yourself them. Jungle Camp – 3 nights - (BLD)
Camping is on fixed, covered platforms in the rainforest. There is a covered dining platform and separate toilet/bathroom hut.

Hunting trail
Accompanied by a Huaorani guide, you'll head out on a walking trail today. The trail is known as the hunting trail and your guide will carry a spear and blowgun. No animals are hunted but you'll be able to learn the ways of this type of hunting, preserved as part of the local culture. Time today is flexible and level of exersion will be tailored to fit the group so, after you walk you can return to the camp or continue to hidden waterfall. (BLD)

Yame Reserve & Yasuni NP
Today you head up river once more to another community deeper in the rainforest. As you travel further into the wilderness you enter the Yame Reserve, a 55,000 hectare reserve managed by the Huaorani Association as an eco-tourism initiative. You'll explore the reserve and learn about Yasuni National Park at Apaika's mini interpretation centre. In the village you can join in with some of their daily activities. The way home is down river and an exciting adventure in two person kayaks. Paddle silent along on the look out for wildlife on the river banks. Arriving in camp by kayak is the end of an incredible journey. (BLD)

Toxic tour; Quito
Travelling on the Via Auca, you will today head back to Quito and back to the real world with a bump. Your experience in the rainforest ends with a 'Toxic Tour' taking you past mini oil refineries on the route back to the city. It is here that you cannot fail to be affected by the environmental impact having spent the last three days enjoying the pristine surroundings. After a brief explanation and a walk around you continue back to Coca for the flight back to Quito.
The aim of today is to show the importance of sustainable tourism as a viable alternative industry to oil exploration. Ok, tourism can be blamed for environmental damage due to long distances being flown but when you see a project like this and witness first hand what is happening, you'll understand the role it can play in helping preserve the natural environment and the indigenous culture. Holiday Inn (AAA) - 1 night - (BLD)

Galapagos; San Cristobal
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to the Galapagos Islands. On arrival you have to pay the national park entrance fee and transit fee ($110 per person). Afterwards, you will transfer to your accommodation on the island. In the afternoon you'll head out on mountain bikes. The terrain is easy but the scenery is unique, you'll head for the interpretation centre and on to Loberia, a great spot for snorkelling, where you may see a wide variety of Galapagos sea life. Large numbers of sea lions can also be seen here. Pimampiro Hotel (AA) - 1 night - (BLD)

Isabela Island
This morning you'll take a scenic flight over the archipelago to Isabela. This is a great chance to see the layout of the islands and understand the basic geography of the Galapagos. The views are stunning! You'll head to Tintoreras Island, a Galapagos in miniature where you can see white tipped reef sharks, sea lions, turtles, rays and penguins. There will also be a chance to to snorkel today and get to know some of the Galapagos sea life that is so famous. Before returning to the hotel you will visit the giant tortoise breeding centre and marvel at the size of these incredible creatures. At the nursery, you could be fooled into thinking the babies were just normal tortioses. Albermarle Hotel (AA) - 2 nights - (BLD)

Sierra Negra
Still on Isabela, today it is time for a hike to the rim of Sierra Negra, the largest volcano of the archipelago. You'll pass amazing volcanic rock formations and learn about the geology of the islands and their fascinating and constantly evolving state. At the edge of the crater the views must be seen to be believed. Isabela is the largest of the islands in the Galapagos, four times the size of Santa Cruz, the next largest. It is also one of the youngest islands in Galapagos. The three main volcanoes are where the rock which forms the islands starts, the further you are from Isabela, the older the rock you are standing on. It is a real eye opener to see how land masses are formed so close up. Budding geologists will be enthralled. (BLD)

Santa Cruz Island
It's an early start today. There is just enough time for breakfast before you journey by speedboat to Santa Cruz and the 'capital' of the Galapagos, Puerto Ayora. This is home to the largest town on the island and is home to a number of small restaurants and shops. It is also home to the Charles Darwin Research Centre - your next stop. The afternoon is free for you to explore, a trip to Tortuga Bay is highly recommended as the beach there is beautiful. Mainao (AA) - 1 night - (BLD)

Baltra; flight to Quito
There is no rush today. As you say goodbye to the islands, you transfer north across the highlands of Santa Cruz, through the misty highlands and onward to Baltra, a smaller island where the airport is located. You get there by road (30 mins) and a short ferry crossing (15 mins). When you get back to Quito you'll once again be transferred to your hotel in the city for your last night in Ecuador, where there is time to say goodbye to new found friends before you leave.
Ask the group leader for a restaurant recommendation as there are many atmospheric places for a final dinner in the old town. Holiday Inn (AAA) - 1 night - (B)
Overnight flight home
This morning, the trip ends in Quito. Those on the group flights will be transferred to the airport for the flight home. (B)
