Arrive Venice

Today you arrive in Venice and make your way to your hotel.

There are only two ways to get around Venice, by boat or on foot. Begin your trip by getting joyfully lost in the small cobbled streets and narrow alleyways that criss-cross the city, or take an iconic gondola ride on the bustling canals.

Please note that your leader will be available to help on your arrival day however they may be in Venice with another group for day 1 of your tour and if so will be spending the evening having a farewell dinner with this group after your group meeting. Your leader will make every effort to suggest a location for dinner for you and your group on the evening of day 1 and will be able to participate in other evening meals for the duration of your trip. Hotel - 2 nts

Day
2

Venice

You start day 2 with a leisurely walking trip led by your group leader, passing all the major sights of this most historic and picturesque city, such as the Grand Canal, the old-world shops of the Rialto Bridge, the Palace of the Doge (ruler of Venice), the Piazza and Basilica di San Marco and the wonderful Bridge of Sighs.

There's also time for you to wander the spacious piazzas and cross the hundreds of tiny bridges, with shops, markets, galleries, churches and stunning buildings around every corner. The afternoon and evening is free and your leader will have suggestions of how to utilise your time here wisely. In the evening, with the streets free of many other tourists, is a great time to choose one of the many fantastic restaurants where you can try local Venetian cuisine.

Day
3-4

Gubbio

Day 3 is a long travel day (approx. 8hrs) as you take several trains followed by a short bus ride inland into Umbria and the medieval hill town of Gubbio.

Here you'll find streets with stone houses and orange-tiled roofs against a mountain backdrop. You take a short orientation walk up through the streets of the town to Gubbio's unique cable car, a 15 minute and 1,000 metre high ride to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo which contains the mummified body of the town's patron saint. From up here you can marvel at the amazing vistas of the Umbrian valleys and mountains plus get a great roof top view of Gubbio itself.

You also take a short hike from the top of Mt Ingino to admire the Umbrian countryside and stunning view down to Gubbio (approx. 2-3hrs). The afternoon and evening are free for you to explore the delights of Gubbio at leisure. Perhaps take in the Civic Museum, the Duomo or the Palazzo Ducale, or relax into the Umbrian pace of life and enjoy the local foods.

There's the opportunity to explore Gubbio and then enjoy a variety of excellent restaurants featuring renowned local cuisine - maybe try one of the dishes that Umbria is famous for; pecorino cheese, game meat and mushrooms all feature on the menus. Hotel - 2 nts

Day
5-6

Assisi/Spello

A bus ride south (approx. 2.5hrs) takes you to Assisi, home of St Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order of monks.

On arrival join an orientation walk with your group leader past all the wonderful sights of Assisi including Piazza Matteotti, Basilica of St Clare-the birthplace of St Francis San Rufino, and the Roman temple remains. Included will be a short guided tour of the magnificent Basilica di San Francesco (St Francis Cathedral) You will be led by a member of the Franciscan community through the building explaining the life and times of St Francis and the beautiful art inside the church.

On day 6 you take the train to charming Spello (approx. 20mins) to sample exclusive local wine and regional food specialties at an enoteca in this medieval town. Spello is perched on the side of Subasio mountain featuring many ancient Roman monuments such as the town walls and city gates, and is also famous for its beautiful hanging gardens blooming each spring. We return to Assisi in the late afternoon.

For your stay in Assisi you stay in the district of Santa Maria degli Angeli, a short distance from the town centre. Hotel - 2 nts (L - day 6)

Day
7-8

rome

You travel by train (approx. 4hrs) to Rome - a city crowded with ancient ruins and religious significance, yet pulsing to the beat of a modern political capital and packed with designer shops, restaurants, cafes and exciting nightlife.

This afternoon there is time for you to head off and explore the sights including the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine, the Forum (centre of ancient Rome), the Victor Emmanuel Monument, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti and Piazza Venezia. Grab a gelato while you stroll around the city's many sights or duck into a bar for a shot of Italy's famous espresso.

The Vatican Museum:
The Vatican Museum is closed on some days including Sundays unless it is the last Sunday of the month, in which case it is open and free (but expect large crowds). Check the Vatican website for these dates. www.vatican.va
Tickets for the Vatican Museum or alternatively the Galleria Borghese can be booked online at www.en.roma.waf.it

As this is a combination trip please note that your group leader and the composition of your group may change on day 8 as some travellers leave and others arrive. Hotel - 2 nts

Day
9-10
Naples/Pompeii

Naples/Pompeii

This morning you travel by train (approx. 3hrs) to Naples. After storing your bags, your leader will take you on an orientation walk through this diverse city. The historical old centre of Naples is a UNESCO listed area and the famous Spanish Quarter is still one of the most densely populated residential areas in Europe.

Naples is the birthplace of the pizza, and with that in mind it is only appropriate to head to one of the many pizzerias and taste what is truly the some of the best that Italy has to offer; yum!

In the afternoon you head off to the Archaeological Museum; one of the best in Europe, which houses all the original artefacts rescued from the Pompeii Site.

You then bid 'arrivederci' to Naples and board your train for Pompeii (approx. 1hr). Your hotel is located in the heart of the picturesque, small town of 'modern' Pompeii. You can sit in the wonderful old town square with the locals and while away the time drinking true Italian coffee and watching the world go by.

On day 10 you will head to the archaeological site of Pompeii, a massive area uncovered in the 18th Century, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius 2000 years ago. Pompeii is a time capsule - quite unlike any other 'ruined' city in the world and a living portrait of village life set in the times of the Roman Empire. Hotel - 2 nts

Day
11-12

Sorrento

This morning you store your bags at your hotel and then catch a bus up the mighty Mount Vesuvius. The final ascent of the volcano can only be done on foot, up a steep but well-made trail of volcanic ash and gravel. The ascent takes around 45 minutes.

Please note that the itinerary over these days is subject to change and may be swapped for reasons such as weather, bus timetables or public holidays.

You then proceed to Sorrento. Your base in Sorrento is in the peaceful adjoining town of Sant'Agnello. Sant'Agnello is quieter than it's close neighbour Sorrento but all the attractions of the resort are easily reached on foot (30 minutes), or by local bus or train.

Day 12 is free for you to make the most of this delightful area. A day trip to Capri is always popular and your leader will be able to help with advice and timetable information. Catch a ferry back to Naples, or to one of the other islands (seasonal variations permitting). Otherwise just explore the myriad attractions of Sorrento, with its lemon groves and clifftop views. Hotel - 2 nts

Day
13-14

Amalfi

After a short bus journey (approx. 2hrs) you arrive at the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi peninsula is the land of rocky coasts, cliff top vistas, azure seas and bright blue skies. People have been coming to the region, the peninsula and its islands for at least the last 2,000 years and it is easy to see why.

you have time to either explore the picturesque town of Amalfi, with its majestic cathedral, and Positano, or just relax on the small but pretty beach!

On day 14 your leader will take you for a half-day walk along the narrow trails which until quite recently were followed by mules and donkeys as they traversed the dramatic landscape. The trails are steep and have many stairs, but the views are breathtaking and amply repay you for the effort! You will see forests, ancient buildings, cliff-tops overlooking the sea, olive groves, vineyards and villages. Hotel - 2 nts
