Istanbul
Arrive in Istanbul. On the evening of your arrival there will be a welcome meeting, during which you will meet your group leader and the other members of your group, followed by dinner.
Istanbul is the only city in the world that stands upon two continents. The main part of the city, which is located at the south-eastern tip of Europe, is separated from its suburbs in Asia by the Bosphorus. The Golden Horn then divides the European city into two parts. Your first morning in Turkey will be spent on a walking tour of some of Istanbul's hidden charms, in the areas around Sultanahmet and Port Eminonu. You'll explore some of the city's dazzling array of cultural and historical sites, as well as taking some time away from the beaten track to discover the back streets and lesser-known sites.
The rest of the afternoon is then free for you to check out the Grand Bazaar (please note that the Bazaar is closed on Sundays), make a visit to Aya Sofya, the home of beautiful mosaics and and incredible reminder that the city was once Constantinople. Designed to be best seen in flickering light, the mosaics depict various scenes and are on show throughout the building. The Vigin and Child in the Vestibule of Warriors is particularly impressive. There are plenty of things to do and see in this city, why not take in some of the other famous sites, such as the Ancient Hippodrome, formerly the cultural focus of the Byzantine Empire, or visit Istnabul's most famous landmark, the Blue Mosque (whilst entry is free, it is good custom to make a donation of a couple of lira after your visit). Built over ten years in the early 17th century on the site of an old Byzantine palace, it's a lasting legacy of elegance and culture. The Mosque itself (so named because of the many blue tiles that line its walls) is impressive in size and contains the tomb of its founder, Sultan Ahmet.
There is also the Archaeology Museum, which contains an incredible array of ancient exhibits, including artefacts from the infamous Troy. You can visit the atmospheric underground Basilica Cistern, a vast underwater storage tank built in 532 AD, the hundreds of columns which support it never fail to impress. For those who prefer to relax, or maybe need a rest after visiting the sights, then spending an hour or two in a hammam (Turkish bath) will leave you scrubbed, polished and rejuvenated. Bursa
Your leave Istanbul early this morning in order to take a fast ferry to the port of Yalova (approx. 1hr). You then board a local bus to Bursa (appox. 1hr 30mins). Bursa is an old and important city with a rich and varied history. It formed a central role in the creation of the Ottoman Empire and from 1326-1402 AD, actually served as the Sultan's capital. With elegant mosques such as the supremely beautiful Yesil Camii, an intriguing covered bazaar and teahouses filled with locals, Bursa offers a glimpse of traditional Turkish life. The afternoon is spent exploring the warren of streets and old Ottoman hans (warehouses). The town is also home to thermal springs nearby at Cekirge, famously used by the Byzantine imperial families. Why not treat yourself to a soak, steam and scrub, Turkish style. The traditional shadow puppet shows also originated here, and are a cultural highlight. Why not take one in with a local kebab, the hearty iskender? Later on this evening you will visit a Dervish Lodge to see a performance of the Sema and learn more about their mesmirising culture. Selcuk
The following day is mostly spend on the road as you drive by public bus to Selcuk (approx. 7hrs), your base while you discover Ephesus, former capital of the East Roman Empire and the best preserved ancient city in Turkey. After a good nights sleep you explore the site, including the amphitheatre and library. Lunchtime comes with a twist, as you learn how to make a Turkish favourite, gozleme. This consists of thin, flaky pastry filled with local ingredients such as spinach and feta cheese.
Later in the afternoon you head out to the nearby Ottoman village of Sirince, where you can spend time taste-testing the locally produced fruit wines, or simply wandering. This old Greek village seems to have been overlooked by modern development and is a photographer's dream. For those who still want more there are a number of other things you can fill your day with (additional charge). If you want to gain a deeper understanding of the ruins at Ephesus, then you can visit the museum in Selcuk. Alternatively you could pay a visit to the historic Basilica of St. John. He is said to have written his gospel in the town and the Basilica was erected upon his grave site in the 6th century. At around the same time a hilltop citadel was also constructed by the Byzantines. Hotel - 2 nights (Bx1)
Pamukkale
This morning you get back on the bus and head inland (approx. 3hrs 30mins) through mountainous landscapes to arrive at one of Turkey's most photographed sites. The gleaming white travertine terraces of Pamukkale are made from limestone deposits, formed when water from the hot springs loses its carbon dioxide. The layers of white calcium carbonate have given Pamukkale its name, 'Cotton Castles'. The pools (now off limits) were famed for their medicinal qualities since the Roman times. Although you are no longer able to bathe in the travertines (calcium ledges), you can still walk through them and instead bathe in the healing thermal springs at the nearby Roman site of of Hierapolis. At one time home to an Oracle, a well-preserved Roman theatre also remains here. You can wander the colonnaded streets and discover the necropolis, with its many tombs looking every bit like a scene from Judgement Day. Hotel - 1 night
Kayakoy
Back on the bus once again, you head away from the tourists to the small village of Kayakoy. From here you will explore the many attractions that this scenic section of Mediterranean coast has to offer, including the resort town of Fethiye. Kayakoy was for a while a ghost village, its ancient stone houses left empty after their Greek inhabitants left Turkey during the great population exchange in the 1920s. Nowadays Kayakoy provides you with the opportunity to enjoy a quiet, traditional Turkish village, where you can enjoy a glass of tea and a game of backgammon. The following day you set out on a half-day trek along a section of rugged coastline. Following part of the Lycian Way to nearby Oludeniz (approx. 6km), where you can swim in the famous Blue Lagoon. Hotel - 2 nights (Bx2)
Kas; Boat Cruise
Some spectactular coastal scenery greets you on your drive from Kayakoy to Kas (approx. 2hrs 30mins). The picturesque village of Kas is the starting point for your boat trip and is the most southerly of all the Turkish resorts. You will swim and snorkel in the crystal clear blue waters, feast on fabulous loac cuisine (sometimes even on fish that you have caught yourselves from the boat!), cruise over the ancient sunken city of Kekova and explore Lycian tombs. Tonight you will sleep under the stars on the deck of your boat (mattresses, blankets and pillows are provided). There is plenty of room both on deck and inside and although they are shared, there is a western-style toilet and fresh-water shower. You bid farewell to the boat and step back on land at the village of Ucagiz, a small farming and fishing village with Lycian and Byzantine ruins just a hop, skip and a jump away. Boat - 1 night, Village Pension - 1 night (Bx2 Lx1 Dx1)
Please note - Due to varying weather conditions over the season, the itinerary will run slightly differently. During the cooler months of March, April, October and November, you will not be spending a night on the boat. Instead you will stay in a local pension in Kas for the night, before travelling to Ucagiz. During the months of May, June and September, the normal itinerary will run as stated above. During July and August you will spend two nights on the boat and not stay overnight in Ucagiz.
Konya
Today sees you moving away from the coast and further inland to Konya on the plains of the Anatolian steppe. While it is a long day of travel the diversity of the scenery will keep you entertained as you cross the Toros Mountain range. Konya is the perfect opportunity for you to sample a traditional Turkish city where mainstream tourism is yet to arrive. It is closely linked with the Whirling Dervish sect of Islam, which was developed by Celaleddin Rumi (or Mevlana) in the 13th century, who is considered one of Islam's greatest Sufi mystics. You will have the option of visiting the incredible Mevlana Museum and tombs of important Dervish leaders (additional charge). Alternatively why not lose yourself in the maze of streets that make up the sprawling local bazaar, where you can find any number of trinkets and oddities, such as felt handicrafts. Hotel - 1 night
Goreme
Leaving Konya you now head to Goreme in the Cappadocia Region (approx. 4hrs). Cappadocia fascinates all travellers. Shaped by wind and water, its otherworldly rock formations have to be seen to be believed. Rock hewn churches, cave homes and incredible underground cities wait to be explored. In times of peace the people in this region lived above the ground, but in times of war or persecution they took to living below it in order to escape. Take a half day walk through one of the nearby valleys and take in the fascinating landscape that surrounds you. Later on enjoy the unique experience of a meal with a local family in their traditional home, surrounded by the spectacular views of the landscape. The following day allows for further exploration of the area. You can trek in one of the nearby gorges and visit one of the small villages nearby. In the afternoon you transfer to the capital Ankara for an overnight train back to Istanbul (approx. 9hrs). The comfortable 4 berth cabins are air conditioned, have fold away beds (with bedding provided) and western-style toilets are located at both ends of the carriage. Depending on the group configuration you may be paired with a member of the opposite sex, or on rare occasions a local person of the same sex. Dinner, breakfast, beverages and snacks are all available in the restaurant wagon. Hotel - 2 nights, overnight train 1 night (Bx3 Dx1)
Istanbul; Fly Home
This morning the train will pull into Istanbul Station at around 9am (subject to delays). You then board a ferry to take you across to the European shore. During the crossing you can marvel at Istanbul's breathtaking skyline of domes, minarets, turrets and city walls. Day rooms are provided at a hotel until 12 noon, for luggage storage and an opportunity to shower and freshen up. Afterwards you might like to join the group for a farewell breakfast when the trip ends for land only passengers.
