Trekking in the Mountains

Trekking in the Mountains

This morning you drive (40 mins) to the first station of the Dragalevtsi chair lift. As you are carried up the side of the mountain you can admire the unique birdseye view that you get over the area. At the end of the lift you find yourselves at Mount Goli Vrah (1428m), which means Bare Peak. From here you trek to Cherni Vrah (The Black Peak 2290m). This is the highest point of the mountain and reveals stunning panoramic views all around you. As you descend, you pass the Skoparnik Peak, which nestles in the foothills of the Rezniovete Massif, before reaching your destination at the Aleko Mountain Base. The route follows dirt roads and well marked pathways and the terrain is easy to walk on. This walk is graded as moderate, without being too challenging. Total walking time is approx 4-5 hours. Ascent/descent: 500m/500m.

Transfer to your next accommodation in Borovets.

Cycling & Kayaking

Cycling & Kayaking

Leaving Sofia behind, you board the bus and head to Plana Village (1hr). Having picked up your bicycles you head off through the mountains to the Valley of the Iskar River (3-4hrs). Once you arrive you will transfer to the village of Shtarkelovo Gnezdo, which means Stork's Nest. Here you will find your next night's accommodation in bungalows near the bank of the Iskar Dam. The mountain route that you cycle along is nice and easy, with more down than up. The dirt road winds through meadows and deciduous woodlands, offering wonderful views the whole way. After lunch you will have a short instruction session and safety briefing, before spending the next 2-3 hours kayaking on the lake. (B)

Having become accustomed to gliding through the water in a kayak, today's goal is to reach the opposite side of the dam, about 4-5km away. Depending on the groups wishes and abilities, you may be able to carry on exploring the dam before you leave. From the opposite shore you get back in the bus and head to Borovets, a ski resort in the winter nesteled in the foothills of the Rila Mountains. (B)

Trekking in the Rila Mountains

Trekking in the Rila Mountains

This morning you board another chair lift, which will take you up to another Bulgarian peak. This time it's the Yastrebets Peak (2369m) that is the starting point of your trek. Enjoy walking along the Dwarf Pine massif, to the Musala Hut and Musalenski Lakes Circus. Passing by the Icy Lake and shelter, you reach the highest peak in the Balkan Peninsula - Mount Musala (2925m). From here you will be able to look out over the surrounding countryside and admire the stunning vistas below you. From here you descend back down to Yastrebets Peak and take the lift down to Borovets once more. Total walking time approx 7-8hrs. Ascent/descent 560m / 560m. (BL)

Horse Riding

Horse Riding

Today you swap two legs for four, as you mount your horses for a ride around Borovets and the lower parts of the Rila Mountains. You ride to the Malka Lukovitsa and Golyam Giol areas where you stop for lunch. The trail then goes in a loop back to Borovets, going past Shumnatitsa chalet on the way. Going by horseback gives you a unique vantage point of the area that you ride through. In total you will be in the saddle for around 5 hours. The route may be customised or changed odepending on the wishes and abilities of the group. (BL)

Cycling

Cycling

Back on two wheels again as you pick up bicycles and ride on the asphalt road from Borovets to the village of Kovatchevski (36km). On the way you will stop for a break in Belchin Banya, where you can pause to relax in the mineral water pools. Anyone who is slightly saddle sore from the horseriding on the previous day will appreciate this in particular! The route is generally fairly flat, although there is some downhill for the first part of the ride. Once you arrive at Kovatchevski you swap from pedal power, to motorised transport and your bus will take you back to Sofia.

Fly home

Fly home

Depending upon flight schedules, there may be time for a short walking tour of the city. In common with many European capitals, Sofia has a fascinating mix of historic buildings, museums, parks and galleries to explore. Most of the main sights are located within walking distance of one another making it easy to get around. Amongst the most popular sights you’ll see are: the Alexander Nevski Church, whose massive domes are reminiscent of St Paul’s in London; the nearby Russian Church with its characteristic gilded ‘onion’ spires; the National Art Gallery and Sofia City Garden. Of course there are shops too. The main shopping boulevard is Vitosha Street but there’s also an extensive indoor market and a couple of former soviet era government buildings, now converted to department stores and malls. Clients with onward connections will transfer to Sofia airport (30 mins) in good time for the return flight home. (B)
