Puno 3827m

Puno 3827m

Fly from the UK to Lima and then a flight onward to Juliaca. Transfer (30 minutes) to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca at 3800m, the world’s highest navigable lake. At this altitude the sun is very hot in the daytime but temperatures at night can drop below freezing in the winter months of June, July and August. If you're feeling the cold, it's possible to buy thick alpaca sweaters from the town's market. Overnight: Hotel Conde de Lemos (LD)

Day

Puno

Puno

This day has been left for personal time to allow you the chance to take things easy and help your body acclimatize as much as possible. Personal time to be supervised by a Tour School Leader at all times. There is the option to visit the Sillustani ruins in the afternoon. Overnight: Hotel Conde de Lemos (BLD)

Day
4
Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca

This morning you travel for 30 minutes by boat across the waters of Lake Titicaca (life jackets will be provided) - reputedly the world's highest navigable lake - to the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians. The life of the Uros is based on the tortora reed which grows in the lake and is used to construct their houses and boats, thereby fostering the theory which led to Thor Heyerdahl's Pacific journey with Ra.Continuing into the lake you arrive at Taquile Island covered in pre-Inca farming terraces and small villages. Overnight: Hotel Conde de Lemos (BLD)

Day
5
Cusco 3300m

Cusco 3300m

A long (7 hour) but classic journey across the expansive ‘altiplano’ your route takes you over the La Raya pass (4321m) to Racchi, site of the Inca Viracocha temple. Continuing your journey the scenery changes as you enter the lower fertile valleys still worked by beasts or groups of industrious villagers before arriving in Cusco Overnight: Hotel Sueños del Inca (BLD)

Day
6
Cusco

Cusco

Today you have the entire day to explore the attractions of Cusco with your guide. In the morning you visit the vast fortress of Sacsayhuaman. The skillfully constructed outer walls consist of massive blocks of stone, (the largest weighing over 350 tonnes) which must have been difficult to maneuver, let alone to cut and dress with such precision. The city itself, the old imperial capital, was laid out in the rough shape of a puma. Today, its orderly streets bear witness to the extraordinary skill of Inca stonemasons; many are still lined with precisely interlocked stonework serving as the foundation for later colonial buildings. You'll explore the inner city on foot with your local guide. Overnight: Hotel Sueños del Inca (BLD)

Day
7
Sacred Valley

Sacred Valley

You drive from Cusco into the Sacred Valley (approx. 2 hours). This is the heartland of the Inca Empire. With its warm climate and fertile soil, the Sacred Valley was considered the greenhouse of the Incas. Start with a visit to the village of Pisac (2950m) then onto the ruined fortress of Ollantaytambo. Overnight: Hotel Casona de Yucay (BLD)

Day
8
Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu

Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu

The morning is set aside for personal time where you can choose from optional walks in the Sacred Valley (Personal time to be supervised at all times by a Tour School Leader. We’ll transfer around lunch time to Ollantambo station to board the train for the spectacular ride to Aguas Calientes and the ‘lost city’ of Machu Picchu. Overnight: Machu Picchu Hostal (BLD)

Day
9
Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu

You leave your hotel this morning to visit Machu Picchu which you'll discover with a guide. It is the most dramatic and enchanting of Inca citadels, constructed from white granite in an extravagantly-terraced saddle between two towering peaks. No description of this mythical place can do it justice. It was rediscovered in 1911 by the American explorer, Hiram Bingham, who believed it to be the lost city of Vilcabamba. It was probably one of a series of agricultural centers that served Cusco. Machu Picchu feels like it was built in the heavens, on dizzying slopes overlooking a u-bend in the Urubamba River. More than one hundred flights of steep, stone steps connect its palaces, temples, storehouses and terraces, and command outstanding views not only of the valley below but also the snow-capped peaks around Salkantay (6271m). Wherever you stand, spectacular terraces appear to be suspended from steep cliffs, transforming the mountain into garden. In the afternoon rejoin the train heading back to Cusco. Overnight: Hotel Sueños del Inca (BLD)

Day
10
Cusco/Lima
