Cairo

Cairo is Africa’s largest city with a population of eighteen million people. Today you will visit the Great Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx, more than 4000 years old the pyramids are the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that remain intact – a testimony to the ingenuity and skill of their builders. You will also visit the famed Egyptian Museum which holds many thousands of exhibits including the Tutankhamen collection probably the world’s greatest archaeological find. Later transfer to Cairo train station and board the overnight sleeper train to Aswan.Overnight: Overnight Sleeper Train (BLD)

Aswan

Arrive in Aswan, here the Nile runs deep and fast between granite rocks as the desert encroaches on the river. The population is a mix of Egyptians and Nubians.  You visit the high Dam an engineering feat built in the 1960s and gaze across Lake Nasser the huge reservoir which it created. By virtue of its position on the old caravan route Aswan has always been a trading centre. Later in the afternoon you will walk in the local bazaar where merchants display a wealth of exotic spices, carpets, leather goods and countless other wares. Overnight: Aswan Cleopatra Hotel  (BLD)

Aswan

Travel by Felucca, a traditional wooden sailboat, for a full day tour. Life jackets are provided. The felucca has no engine so you are reliant on the wind to propel you today.  You will visit a Nubian Village towards the bottom of the Elephantine Islands and enjoy dinner in a traditional Nubian house.Overnight: Aswan Cleopatra Hotel  (BLD)

Kom Ombo/Luxor

Kom Ombo/Luxor

Visit the splendid temple of Kom Ombo which is uniquely dedicated to two gods, Haroeris (Horus the elder) and Sobek (the crocodile god).  Continue your journey to Luxor and have the afternoon for leisure time. Students during leisure time will be accompanied at all times by a tour school leader.There is plenty to discover in Luxor. Luxor Temple is located within the city centre itself and there are museums and a colourful souk nearby. Known in ancient times as Thebes, Luxor was the capital of Egypt’s new kingdom for some 500 years.Overnight: Luxor Tutotel Hotel  (BLD)

Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings

This morning you visit the ancient tombs of the Pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings. Rising early, you cross the Nile and drive to the secluded valley where 63 Pharaohs were buried as part of their journey to the after-life. In the company of a local guide, you can explore some of the exquisitely decorated tombs of these rulers of long ago. It is here that the burial site of the boy-king, Tutankhamun, discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922, can be found (optional visit). The visit to the Valley of the Kings brings to life much of what you saw in the Egyptian Museum. On your way back to the river, you see the imposing funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female ruler.Overnight: Luxor Tutotel Hotel  (BLD)

Karnak

Karnak

The treasures of the East bank await you today, including the incredible Temple of Karnak.  Many architects and engineers contributed to Karnak’s construction, a task that spanned the reign of successive Pharaohs over a period of 1400 years. The highlights of its many wonders are the great hypostyle hall, which contains 134 huge columns, and the beautifully carved obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut. Cairo Fly Home

Arrive in Cairo & transfer to your hotel. You will have time to freshen up and then be transferred to the airport for your flight home.  (B)
