Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is an intriguing city that was born between the Borneo jungle and the South China Sea. Having recovered from World War II bombings, 'KK' now possesses a gateway charm that can only be found in a frontier town. If you have enough free time, why not immerse yourself in local history at the Sabah State Museum, visit the Monsopiad Cultural Village (once home to a notorious headhunter), or explore the islands off Kota Kinabalu - excellent for swimming or snorkelling (all at additional charge).

There is plenty to see and do here. The Mountain Botanic Garden is an excellent showcase of the diverse plant life on the mountain, as flora from all over the Park has been replanted here. The afternoon is free for you to relax here.
The next day you'll will drive to the Rasa Ria Shangrila Orangutan Sanctuary which is set within an area of 64 acres, within the grounds of the Sangri-la Rasa Ria resort. The centre offers the curior explorer the opportunity to meet Borneo's famous Orangutans, who have been rescued and will stay with the humans for a fewyears before they return to the wild and thrive. All of the Orangutans here are babies and full of energy, making for a very enjoyable experience. You return to Kona Kinabalu and head out to a Mari Mari cultural visit in the evening. Be prepared to teleport back to the times of ancient Borneo through the display of unique ingenious architecture, simulated lives and ritualistic ceremonies. Horizon Hotel (AAA) - 3 nights Swimming pool (Bx3, Dx2)
Garama River / Kota Kinabalu wetlands.
This morning is free to relax and enjoy the city or just unwind by the swimming pool.
This afternoon you are in for a real treat as we head to the Garama river. A slow paced trip is a unique chance to see up close the rare species of Proboscis monkeys, with their special, oversized noses and pot-like bellies. This variety of animals live only in this area and viewing them in their natural habitat is one of the main reasons tours are organized. The Garama Village, situated along the river, offers you the possibility to observe the inhabitants’ way of life, by seeing them involved in their daily activities. It is an enriching experience that helps you understand better elements of other cultures and civilizations
The following day you will head out a short distance from the city to Kota Kinabalu wetlands. The site covers 60 acres of mangrove forest and a 1.5km boardwalk brings you deep into the mangrove - a unique ecosystem where land meets sea. A 45-minute stroll on the boardwalk is a pleasant experience where you can enjoy fresh air and tranquility, while spotting interesting birds, plants and wildlife.
In the afternoon you will visit the Sabah museum, showcasing an interesting insight into the history of this fascinating country. Today is an early start as we drive for 2-3 hours to the district of Kuala Penyu where you will hop on a boat to Pulau Tiga island. The island's claim to fame is that it was the first ever location of the reality TV series Survivor, chosen as its represents the idyllic island paradise. There is however more to the island than beautiful beaches and stunning azure blue water. Pulau Tiga is famous for its therapeutic natural volcanic mud. The island is believed to have been formed by the eruption of several mud volcanoes after a large earthquake on the Philippine island in 1897. Since then the island was expanded and formed into its current size thanks to subsequent mud volcano eruptions. In the afternoon you will visit the mud volcano , which is really a series of bubbling mud pools. The mud is mineral rich and very good for your skin but first and foremost it is great fun for the family to get covered and enjoy their own mud bath.
The following morning we take a trip to nearby and uninhabited snake island, so named due to the propensity of sea snakes found in and around the island. According to a legend, Snake Island is the resting place of a heart-broken princess, whose lover is turned into rock by black magic of her sisters. The angry king penalized the evil sisters by turning their islands into mud volcanoes (Pulau Tiga).
The island takes only 15 minutes to walk around and you will be accompanied by a guide to highlight the most interesting points and help you locate the sea-snakes , if you want to! You will than enjoy a snorkelling expedition before returning to the Pulau Tiga. The rest of the day is free.
