The old colonial capital of Guatemala, Antigua remains the cultural centre of the country. Its cobbled streets, Indian markets, colonial buildings, and indigenous marimba music emanating from the many bars and restaurants create a fantastic atmosphere.
While here, you visit a women's cooperative. The cooperative was founded in 1992 as an independent grassroots organisation whose goal is to assist community development, health, education, clean water and income generation. The women demonstrate their skills in traditional crafts such as weaving, textiles and cooking.
Maison de Maria (2 nts) (B L day 2)
This morning you will have a chocolate making class, in the place where chocolate was first invented. In the afternoon you transfer to Guatemala City and take a short flight to Flores, from where you transfer to Tikal National Park.
Once a powerful Mayan city, Tikal was abandoned in the 10th century and sank into the surrounding jungle. It's now alive with jungle wildlife and awe-inspired visitors.
Jaguar Inn (1 nt) (B)
This morning you take a tour of the ruins of Tikal.
Towering above the jungle of the Tikal National Park, the five granite temples of Tikal are an awesome sight and one of the most magnificent Maya ruins. Hidden in the jungle growth is a maze of smaller structures just waiting to be explored. The energetic can climb to the top of the ruins for spectacular views over the canopy. You may even spot toucans, macaws and other colourful birds.
In the afternoon you drive across the border into Belize, and to the town of San Ignacio.
You have a full day at your leisure to discover San Ignacio. This beautiful town is surrounded by fast flowing rivers, waterfalls and Mayan ruins, and is an ideal base to explore the region. Some of the optional activities include a day trip to Xunantunich, an impressive Mayan ceremonial centre with panoramic views of the countryside. The east side of one of the temples has a unique stucco frieze and the central plaza has three carved stelae. Getting to the site is half the fun: you'll need to take a hand-cranked ferry to cross the river. It is also possible to take a day trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge area to visit waterfalls, warm swimming holes and a huge system of caves. The cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal is a living museum of Mayan relics. Wade through water until you reach the Mayan ceremonial site. Here you will find ceramic pots and crystallised skeletons, preserved by the natural processes of the cave for over 1,400 years. For those who can't get enough jungle fun, there are also opportunities to go tubing or canoeing. And for those who would like some time to reflect on the beauty of nature, there is always the option to visit San Ignacio's butterfly garden. In the late afternoon and at night, many little barbeque street stalls open and serve huge portions. Make sure you give it a try, sit down next to the road, chat with the locals and enjoy a juicy, tasty chicken leg.
Midas Resort (2 nts) (B x2 Lx1) - Swimming Pool
This morning you drive to Belize City, and hop on a ferry to San Pedro, arriving early in the evening. The next day is free to explore the island and surrounding reef.
San Pedro is the main town on Ambergris Caye, a tropical island paradise sung about by Madonna in 'La Isla Bonita'. Although geographically located in Central America, the Belize Cayes have more of a Caribbean vibe. Located a short boat ride away from the coast, there are a number of these islands to choose from, but you will base ourselves on Ambergris Caye as it is popular with travellers and has some of the best facilities. From here it is possible to arrange day trips to other Cayes or to take a local boat out to the reef. Each island has its own particular character, but all of them have the unmistakeable Caribbean pace and charm.
Sunbreeze Hotel (2 nts) (Bx2) - Swimming Pool
This morning you transfer by boat to the Mexican town of Chetumal, from which you take a bus to Tulum.
Tulum is a beach paradise on the Caribbean coast. Spend your time relaxing on the beach or strolling along the white sands. In the evenings kick back and watch the waves with a margarita. For a taste of Mayan architecture take an optional visit of the ruins of Tulum. These ruins sit atop a cliff amid palm fringed beaches and white sand beaches. You can even go for a swim within its ancient walls.
Villa Tulum (1 nt) (B) - Swimming Pool
Playa Del Carmen
You have a free morning in Tulum before transferring in the afternoon to Playa del Carmen.
With azure waters, powdery beaches and a European feel, Playa del Carmen is a resort city close to Cancun but without the party atmosphere. Spend your time snorkelling among the mangroves, diving in underground caverns or strolling along the white sands. In the evenings kick back and watch the waves with a margarita. For adventures further afield take a ferry across the turquoise seas to Cozumel, an island famous for its reef diving.
Other activities from Playa del Carmen include the water 'theme parks' of Xcaret or Xel-Ha where you can swim with dolphins, witness a Mayan ball game, see native butterflies in their natural habitat, or walk under water.
Aqualuna or Illusion Hotel (1 nt) (B) - Swimming Pool
There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time. Please check for checkout times and luggage storage possibilities. If you are on group flights you will transfer to the airport for your overnight flight home.
In order to make the most of what Playa has to offer, you strongly recommend that you extend your stay in Playa del Carmen for one or two extra days. Please contact us if you need us to assist you with additional accommodation. If you can afford a few extra days in Playa, you may want to spend time snorkelling among the mangroves or strolling along the white sands. For adventures further afield take a ferry across the turquoise seas to Cozumel, an island famous for its reef diving.
