Overnight flight to Johannesburg

Day
2

Arrive Johannesburg; free time

After your flight, you transfer (approx. 30 minutes) to your first night’s accommodation and check in. Johannesburg lies at the centre of the Witwatersrand, literally meaning ‘ridge of white waters’. It was on this ridge that the world’s richest gold fields were discovered little more than 100 years ago. Jo’burg or E’Goli ‘the City of Gold’ is the heart of the emergent nation of South Africa. This afternoon you can head out on an optional township tour of Soweto (additional charge) - an exciting opportunity to get an insight into contemporary life in South Africa, and to learn about the history about one of South Africa's best known townships. Hotel– 1 night

Please make sure that if you explore Johannesburg on your own that you take advice of where it is safe to walk, especially in the evening. There have been isolated attempts of robbery in recent times and although unpredictable the risk of these can be minimised by taking local advice.

Day
3/4
Mkuzi Game Reserve

Mkuzi Game Reserve

Please meet with your tour leader in the hotel reception at 06.30. Departing early from Johannesburg you will travel into the heart of KwaZulu Natal where you will stay in the Mkuzi Game Reserve, a last safe haven for the endangered Black Rhino. You will explore the reserve on game drives and visit a hide overlooking one of the waterholes to watch the game come down to drink. Chalet/tented lodge – 2 nights ( Bx1 Lx2 Dx2)

Day
5/7
Kosi Bay

Kosi Bay

Kosi Bay Nature Reserve covers a region of fertile estuaries, mangroves, dune forest and lakes, which you explore on foot and by kayak. Leatherback turtles lay eggs on the beaches in season (November - January). You’ll visit the Kosi Bay river mouth to snorkel and watch the local fisherman in the estuary. A local guide will lead you on a walk in the neighbouring village where you meet local Zulu people and are introduced to their culture and customs. Tented lodge – 3 nights ( Bx3 Lx3 Dx3)

Day
8
Swaziland

Swaziland

Travel into Swaziland and enter Hlane Game Reserve which is surrounded by beautiful African bushveld. Here you’ll go on a guided walk with a Hlane ranger in the general game section of the park. Chalet – 1 night (BLD)

Day
9
Maputo

Maputo

Enter Mozambique at the Namaacha border post and travel to Maputo, formerly known as Lourenço Marques. Portuguese and African cultures meet in an exquisite blend of seafood and vibrant life and perhaps sample the excellent seafood in a local restaurant. Chalet – 1 night (BL)

Day
10-12
Inhambane

Inhambane

Arab influences are strong in Inhambane dating back to when slaves, ivory, gold and spices were traded. Explore Inhambane and its 200 year old cathedral, before moving to Praia de Barra to stay in casitas under the palms next to the beach. Dhow rides and scuba diving on coral reefs are available (additional charge). Casitas – 3 nights (Bx3,Lx2,Dx3)

Day
13
Bilene

Bilene

You head south along the coast to the town of Bilene situated on the shores of the Uembje lagoon. The lagoon is 8km wide and 27km long with clear water and white, sandy beaches. You can spend the afternoon exploring the lagoon with options of kayaking and snorkelling (additional charge) or simply relax and swim in the shallow, calm waters. Casitas – 1 night (BL)

Day
