Peruvian religious pilgrimage set for World Heritage status

A famous religious pilgrimage that takes place in Cusco each year is on the verge of receiving World Heritage status from UNESCO.

People taking Peru holidays may be fascinated to hear that the procession to the sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllurit'i, which involves people from all around Peru and some parts of Bolivia, could have its cultural heritage preserved by the organisation.

According to PeruthisWeek.com, the event is one of the most important religious occasions in the Peruvian calendar.

It takes place along an eight-mile stretch between Mahuayani to Sinakara and is held thousands of metres above sea level.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage will decide if the festival is worthy of the accreditation during a meeting in Indonesia at the end of November.

Peru - and Cusco in particular - is becoming an increasingly popular destination among adventure holidaymakers and president of the National Chamber of Tourism Carlos Canales recently told Andina that it has the potential to become one of the most visited countries in the world.
