Peru features heavily in World Travel Awards list

The World Travel Awards are extremely prestigious and are widely referred to as the Oscars of the tourism industry.

They were launched in 1993 with the intention of celebrating excellence in the travel sector and the prize giving will be held for the 19th time in 2012.

Peru holiday destinations are set to feature heavily in the ceremony, as a number of places have received nominations.

Arguably the most important gong is the South America's Leading Destination award, which sees more than 200,000 travel industry professionals vote for their favourite holiday hotspot on the continent.

Lima and Machu Picchu have both been put forward for the prize, which is a reflection of their booming popularity on a global scale.

They will come up against seven other locations, including Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Santiago in Chile and Argentinean capital Buenos Aires.

Machu Picchu was also nominated in the South America's Leading Green Destination section.
