Nepalese tourism leaders hold elephant festival

Tourism chiefs are hoping that the recent elephant festival will encourage more people to take Nepal holidays.

The event was held to raise awareness of the fascinating creatures that can be seen during trips to the Asian country.

Some of the animals took part in a unique football match, while others were involved in an elephant beauty pageant.

Nepal is a popular holiday hotspot thanks to the amazing number of high quality treks that are held through the Himalayas. Around 600,000 foreigners visited the nation last year and travel ministers are hoping that promotional events such as the elephant festival will help boost this figure considerably in the near future.

"We hope that the elephant festival will help bring more tourists to Chitwan. We need both foreign and domestic visitors," commented event organiser Ghanashyam Shrestha.

The Associated Press recently reported that Apa Sherpa - the man who has conquered Everest a record 21 times - will embark on a 1,700-km trek through the Himalayas next month.
