Nepal holiday 'could include Year of Tiger celebrations'

People who book a family activity holiday to Nepal could get involved in the country's Year of Tiger celebrations.

Officials at last week's Tiger Workshop in Kathmandu have decided to dedicate 2010 to the animal, a move which is aimed at increasing awareness of issues surrounding its welfare.

The group argued construction works near habitats need to be reduced and more resources are required to help manage the areas, according to the Nepal News.

Global Tiger Initiative (GTI), which arranged the conference, instigated a march in the country's capital as part of the demonstration, which involved pupils from 30 local schools.

Prime minister of the nation Madhav Kumar Nepal gave a speech to delegates, while president of the World Bank Robert Zoellick sent a video message.

The rally also saw traditional Nepalese musicians and dancers perform for the crowds.

GTI is arranged by the International Tiger Coalition, which is made up of 39 non-governmental organisations.
