Zanzibar's Stone Town 'essential experience on holiday to Tanzania'

Travellers interested in the history of Africa should include a trip to Zanzibar in their holiday to Tanzania, one commentator has suggested.

Writing for the Guardian, Poorna Shetty recounted a jaunt to the Indian Ocean island, stating it is home to some "magnificent" architecture.

She referenced a "famous account" of Stone Town and its courts in her piece, which was penned by Princess Salome in the 1800s.

According to the journalist, the area "retains many original features".

"The streets are labyrinthine," she said. "The trick is to not have a particular destination. We meander past whitewashed buildings furnished with dainty shop boards hanging from brass hooks."

Ms Shetty also highlighted the beautiful sandy beaches and lush greenery on the island, along with its wealth of seafood restaurants.

Those looking to experience their own piece of Zanzibar could book onto one of Adventure Company's holidays to Tanzania.

The Zanzibar and Selous trip includes five days on the island - including a visit to Stone Town - while the Serengeti Safari Family Holiday offers an extension to the Indian Ocean destination.
