Group trekking holiday in Peru raises £32k for charity

a href="http://www.adventurecompany.co.uk/country-overview.aspx?productid=34205" target="_self">Holidays in Peru could be the ideal way for travellers to experience some of the world's most impressive sights while raising money for charity, if the example of one group of trekkers is followed.

A 21-strong team hailing from Derry, Donegal, Newry, Belfast, Downpatrick, Armagh and England raised £32,000 to help children in Tanzania and Ethiopia by making a five-day trek through the country in November 2009.

The Derry Journal reported that the group set off from Cusco, before trekking for up to 10 hours every day across the Peruvian countryside.

On the final day of the adventure, they made their way to the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu, which provided a "stunning finale" to their trip, the news provider said.

Sarah Gallagher, events fundraising coordinator for non-profit body Children in Crossfire, commented: "The participants undertook a fantastic and challenging adventure so that children in Tanzania and Ethiopia have the opportunities for a better future."

Adventure Company's Flight of the Condor and The Inca Trail treks both provide a chance for prospective travellers to follow in the tracks of the group.
