Holidays in Peru 'grew in popularity in 2009'

Now could be a good time to book family activity holidays in Peru, as the country's tourist board has revealed that more people are viewing the country as a potential destination.

The Travel Agency and Tourism Association, otherwise known as Apavit, announced that despite the current economic downturn, the number of travellers heading to the South American nation rose by five per cent in 2009.

Reported in English by LivinginPeru.com, the organisation's president Hector Velit remarked that while other countries had struggled to attract travellers during the recession, Peru had not faced this difficulty.

"Tourism was affected due to the economic crisis; however, this sector continued to grow due to the regional and internal tourism as well as the combined efforts of the private sector and the government," he said.
