Peru to promote Puno's ancient mystic traditions to travellers

Puno will be promoted to travellers planning family activity holidays in Peru on the strengths of its cultural and mystical heritage.

The Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) for Puno said it hopes the initiative will encourage more tourists to visit the city, as well as the floating isles of Uros, during their holidays in Peru.

Percy Mamani, head of Dircetur for Puno, said the organisation intends to finish the financing of the project by the end of May 2010, by which time it also hopes to have finalised a tourist circuit for the area.

State-run news agency Andina reports that the campaign will focus on the ancient customs of the islands, along with historic ceremonies and rituals.

"We are working [on] this project, which has also been promoted by the people, to diversify the tourist offer and attract more visitors," Mr Mamani was quoted as saying.

The Adventure Company's Land of the Incas trip allows travellers to explore Puno and the Uros islands during their own family activity holidays in Peru.
