Walking holidays: Morocco to promote sustainable tourism
20 January 10
Hiking enthusiasts who are mulling over booking walking holidays to Morocco have learned that the north African country intends to promote itself as a destination for eco-friendly tourism.
The nation is targeting a ten per cent increase in visitor numbers over the next 12 months, tourism minister Yassir Znagui revealed, to make up for a drop in arrivals in 2009 while the world was in the grip of the recession.
However, he told Reuters that the country is not prepared to sacrifice the protection of its natural habitats and landmarks in the quest to boost traveller volumes.
He said: "We have a strong desire to gear Morocco towards sustainable tourism, respect for the environment and a top quality tourism product.
"That does not imply a drop in profitability."
The Adventure Company offers a number of walking holidays for travellers who are keen to take in Morocco's stunning scenery, such as the Peaks of the Atlas trip.
