Dante Alejandro Minaya Garro

The Adventure Company Leader of the Month June 2010

Country:     Peru

Trips run:    PU - Classic Peru,   PT - Empire of the Incas

How long have you been leading trips for The Adventure Company:

8 years

Before being a Tour Leader, I was a High School Teacher, and proud of it because Peru’s history is simply amazing, however I quit for economical reasons, now working as a tour leader I still teach and I find excellent teachers too, so now this profession is an exchange of knowledge and that fills me as a tour leader.

What is your travel experience/background?

I lived for one year in Florida U.S. in 2001. Now, visiting neighbouring countries like Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia.

What is your favourite activity /event on the trips you lead?

It’s to organise activities, which I call tests (Physical and Mental ones) in order to get a good performance of clients on the Inka Trail.

What is the best thing about your job?

To show, explain, and live the history, folklore, nature & wildlife of this unique place called Peru.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

Once, In a restaurant one of our clients ordered Lengua (type of fish) as a main course, after a while the main courses arrived, and he started eating soon, minutes later he shouted ‘THIS ISN’T FISH’, so the waiter came and explained him that Lengua is also a word to name The Cows Tongue, he didn’t order fish for the rest of the holiday.

In your mind, what is the best place to visit in your country?

Cuzco, of course, it’s the Rome of the Andes, besides being a centre of spiritualism and Sacred City in the Inka times. Everybody should come to know Cuzco, at least once in the lifetime.

In your mind, what is the most interesting custom in your country?

People from the Andes understand that any activity we do, like planting, farming, building, or even getting married, you should need to ask permission to mother earth and Christian gods, so it’s an excellent reason to celebrate with parties and religious festivals.

In your mind, what is the most important phrase to know?

Only when you have been at the bottom of the deepest valley, will you realise how magnificent is the view from the top of the highest mountain.

In your mind, when is the best time to vist and why?

For sure, between April and September, it’s the dry season along the Andes, better light for pictures, and time of an endless amount of native and religious parties.

In your mind, what are the most important items to pack for your tour?

-Good Trekking Shoes
-Football Shoes
-Binoculars
-Torch
-Warm Clothes
-And a Very Big Smile
-With an Open Heart

What is your life motto?

My son Leandro, gives me the energy, the love and the strength to fulfil my goals.
