January
Timkat
Where and when? Ethiopia, 19 January 2013
Why go? Ethiopians celebrate Epiphany in style. A three day extravaganza, the most important festival begins as men, women and children clad in white robes gather for day and night-long ceremonies. To commemorate Christ’s baptism in the Jordan river, the pools and rivers are blessed and people bathe and splash onlookers with water. On the final day, the feast of St Michael, people tuck into special meads and breads.

Holi Festival
Where and when? India, 27 March 2013
Why go? March is the month of the Holi Festival celebrations in India. Holi celebrations mark the beginning of spring with the locals painting themselves in bright colours to match the vivid yellows and purples of the natural blooms. This festival is about fun and freedom and covering your neighbour in a rainbow of coloured water and powder. Expect mess and merriment.

Where and when? India 3 November 2013
Why go? Think India and you always imagine vibrant colours of pink and indigo cities, exuberant temples and henna-painted hands. But some days are even brighter than others. Over Diwali, one of the most joyful of all the Hindu festivals, millions of candles are lit and hundreds of firework displays are held across India to celebrate the festival of light. It is customary to give gifts as a show of love and affection to family and friends.

November
Pushkar Camel Festival
Where and when? Pushkar, India, 7-16 November 2013
Why go? If you want to buy a camel, this is the place to go. But even if you don’t, the greatest camel fair in the world has to be seen to be believed. Thousands of people, pilgrims and camels descend on Pushkar, a sleepy village in Rajasthani desert to trade, worship and enjoy the madness. You can even enter the competition for the longest moustache.
