Peaks of Tanzania

Welcome Guest, to make a post on the forum you need to login or register.

Hi people!

With less than 3 months to go, I thought it might be worth seeing who else out there is booked up to go to Tanzania on the 15th to do the route up Kili that only the brave need apply for?! I'm allowing myself to get excited now although the nerves are kicking in too!

Hi Alex - nice to hear from someone else on this trip!

I have a habit of putting these posts on the forum and then forgetting to check them to see if anyone has replied - sorry for the delay!

Apparently there are 9 of us booked on this trip so that's 4 accounted for! I'm travelling on my own but I know one other couple on this trip as I met them 2 years ago when we ended up on a Morocco trek together.

It's amazing that there is only 52 days to departure (and also scary!) I've just got my passport back today with newly acquired visa so it's making it all very real!

So how many of these trips have you done before?

Hi Sally,

Whoops forgot to check up on whether anyone had replied - sorry for the delay. I can't believe how close it's getting got all my injections scheduled for next week :( . Haven't sorted the visa yet going to send that off this weekend. Last trip I did like this was a couple of years ago when I did the Everest base camp trek in Nepal which was great fun.

Not heard from anyone else on this trip yet but I think there are at least 2 other solo travellers.

Have you done much training?

Hi Alex,

I did the Adventure Nepal trip about 3 years ago, which was incredible. I loved Nepal and fell in love with these kind of trips from that point on! Everest Base Camp is definitely on my to-do list.

I've sorted my visa but not the injections yet. I'm booked in for those the week after next, which is never fun. I did my visa through travcour and it was very easy and quick. I always panic about sending my passport anywhere out of my control so the least amount of time it has to be the better! I think they only had it for a week, so they were very good.

I'm going on a walking weekend this weekend coming with two of the others going on this trip (they are called Fish and Aly.) We're off to Shropshire (not that hilly but I think it's all about the mileage this weekend!) I do quite a bit of running and cycling so I'm hoping that will tide me over as far as fitness is concerned. The main training that I need to get used to is use of trekking poles! It's the first time I've opted to take them on a trip and I'm not entirely sure I will ever get used to them!! As far as altitude is concerned, I did the High Inca Trail last year and that reaches 5000m so, again, I'm hoping that gave me a pretty good idea of what high altitude is like. This of course will be a completely different experience and to an extent I don't think anyone knows how they are going to be affected until they get there! Think it's a massive bonus we get to do Meru first.

Can't believe it is is only 6 weeks away as of tomorrow. I booked this is in November last year and it seemed such a long way away then! I've sorted my train ticket out to get down to Heathrow. I think the only thing I've got left to sort is spending money. I don't think you can take their currency in with you so will probably just take some British pounds and a bit of US dollar to change when I get there... and, of course, my credit card - I think I've ended up using it at some point on every trip I've gone on!!

Hello,

I'm booked on this trip too so thought i'd say hello! 25 days to go!

Just got to decide on my anti-malarials and how much spending money to take...anyone have any idea how much we'll need...?

I'm guessing not that much given that we're on trek for all but 3 days and we get BLD provided most days.

Any idea?

Eeek!

Hello Sharon!

Eeek, indeeed! Only 17 (soon to be 16) days to go and I cannot wait!

As far as money is concerned I've got $400 (apparently it's the easiest to exchange and dollars are what you pay the porters with) and I'll rely on that and my trusty credit card! I don't think we'll need hardly anything for food but I think most of the money will go on porter's tips with a few dollars for some celebratory tipples on the evening when we get back down! I understand there's an additional charge for an optional trip (I think it's for the safari between the two mountains) as well so I'm hoping it will be enough... and if not that's where the credit card comes in!

I've got the full strength Lariam (Mefloquine) for my anti-malarials. It's what the doc recommended so I'm going with it. Hopefully it'll prevent the malaria but won't send me too crazy - it's never good when you see the possible side effects are hallucinations!!

I'm just about all ready with everything piled up in my spare room ready to pack - just 11 more shifts to get through at work and that's all I'm counting down now!

Hi Sally!

Cool - I'll probably take $400 and a credit card too then!

I can't see where we'll have any time to spend any money from the itinerary so yes, think it'll be mainly tips and drinks on the last night...

I've ordered Doxycyclene (spelling?) which i've taken before and hap problems...but my doctor assures me it's because i wasn't taking them properly (i.e. standing up and with a massive glass of water)

If I have problems again i'll just cover myself in Deet. I'm assured by other people who've done this trip that they never saw a single mozzie the whole time!

I have another friend who had the hallucinations on Larium and made me promise not to take it!

Can't believe it's 2 weeks on monday!!

This time next week we will all be furiously packing!!! Can't believe it's come round so quicky. I booked this trip in November last year so it felt like an eternity away then!!

I've started on the Lariam now and so far, so good! My friend took it when she went to Borneo and had no problems with it, so I'm taking my chances. You only have to take one tablet a week as well, which makes it easier. When I went to Nepal I was on one that you needed to take every day and then a separate pill once a week so this is much better... assuming the hallucinations don't make an appearance! I feel like a pharmacy counter at the moment having recently had my yellow fever jab, typhoid booster, malaria tablets and also taking aspirin to try and thin my blood a bit so I don't have to take Diamox. let's hope it's all worth it!

Hope you are all ready people and see you in just over a week!!! x

Woooo just one week to go!!!!!!!! Can't believe we fly out next Monday I'm so excited I can't believe it's finally here! I've never taken malaria tablets before but I've got Malarone tablets, not sure whether they are any good or not? Just got to get currency sorted then I'm all set.

Looking foward to seeing you all next week!!

This week is going to go so slowly!

Alex.
