Langtang and Lakes (15th April)

Welcome Guest, to make a post on the forum you need to login or register.

Hi,

I am going on this trip with my partner, Craig.  We haven't even started to get fit for this yet, but plan to soon into the New Year!

Just wondering who else is signed up for this trip?

Hi Louise

Me and my husband Ian, are going on this trip. We haven't done much training either. Have you done anything like this before?

Hi,

Yes, i have been on quite a few treks before, have you? My partner Craig is all new to it though. We still have plenty of time to get fit, i am sure (although i normally think that until the week before we go when it is too late!!!). Where abouts do you live? We live in Surrey which is not great for hill walking! Do you know how many other people are booked on the trek?

Hi

I'm booked on this trip as well. I'm travelling alone. I did the Anapurna Sanctury trip 12 months ago but nothing that active since.

By the way I live just north of Manchester. If anyone else is coming from round here let me know we could car share.

Hi Bob
I've just found out a Facebook friend of mine did the Annapurna Sanctury last year. I wonder if he was on your trip.
Did you do the Thorong La pass? I think that's how you spell it.

Hi Diane

I am useless at Napali names so I can't say about the pass. I've looked at my map we went up from Chandrakot via Hille Ghorepani & Chomrog and came bak via Ghandruk. I went on the 2009 October-November trip with the Adventure Company. If he was on my trip he will remember me I came back in a wheelchair - long story.

Hi Bob and louise
Bob, that's a long drive to Kathmandu. It would be cheaper to fly.
We live in Hull. We did the Adventure Nepal last year. It nearly killed us. God help us on this trip. We've started training a little. Our ruck sacks will have bricks in come February. Before you say anything yes they will only be Lego bricks. I favour the yellow ones myself.
Louise what treks have you done?

Hi Everyone,

Its really nice to hear from you all! it has made the holiday a lot more real.... very exciting (and slightly scary!!).
You are getting me very scared talking about the training for this trip... i literally have done no exercise for 2 months. I broke my hand in a hockey game a few weeks ago and have been avoiding any excerise ever since - i will have to do something soon though, although i think i will be giving the bricks in my rucksack a miss! :-)
Ive done quite a few treks - a couple in India, everest base camp, annapurna sanctuary, winter toubkal and one in the Alps... as you can see i am a great fan of the Adventure company! My last trip was climbing Stok Kangri in India and that was summer last year, so altitude and walking is going to be a shock to the system!
We are obviously all great fans of Nepal - i cant wait to get back there again!

Diane, i only just saw your original post for this trip...sorry, i completely missed that when i put this post up - i wasnt ignoring you!!

Louise ,Craig, Bob, and anyone else going on the Lakes and Lantang trip. Happy New Year!!!! Good luck with the training, as i'm sure like Ian and myself, you will be training hard. If you google the area and see other peoples experiences you might wish you hadn't had that 2nd mince pie.
Speak to you soon and see you in April.

Yes, Happy New Year to everyone! :-)
Oh no, what have you heard about other people's experiences??! You have got me worried now... i definitely have more than 2 mince pies to work off!!
Definitely going to have to train hard over the next few months - I am sure the next 3 months are going to fly by!

I'm a little worried myself. The videos show quite a ruggged terrain and snow at high altitude but,the people in the video are still smiling so lets remember it is a holiday. I know if we train hard over the next few months we will be fine. Ian and myself can't stop talking about it and getting very excited.
Do you have all your kit yet? We bought new down waterproof jackets. We didn't think the ones we had would be warm enough.
Ian laughed because mine is one size too small. I intend to lose at least a stone this time. I don't want to carry any excess baggage up Tserko Ri.

Hi Diane

Started training at least I've gone back to the gym and went for a walk this weekend.

Since you asked about the Sanctuary trip this is a link to my photos you might spot your friend

As far as kit goes I'm just cutting down on what I took last time. We walked in shorts and T shirts most of the time. Never needed the waterproofs thank god and I bought a down jacket in Kathmandu but only wore it once. A lady on the trip had been to Everest the year before and said it was cold there and talked me into it.

It didn't get cold till we were above 13,000 ft.

A fleece or shell was enough in the morning and arround the tea house at night most days.

I'm still taking the down jacket and waterproofs though.

Hi Keith

Glad you liked the photos. I'm happy for you to just lift the ones you like off flickr as long as they are just for web use.

Hi Everyone,

Diane, I will defitnitely add you to my facebook... i dont go on there very often though so please bear with me!

Craig and I are really excited about the holiay now - a little apprehensive about getting fit in time, but it'll be great fun anyway!! I think we will be going shopping this weekend to get a few bits of kit. I have got most of mine sorted I think, but Craig needs a few bits like walking poles and a new day sack. Do you have much more kit to get?? Good on you for buying the next size down - i think its a great idea, and with all the training there is no doubt about you getting into it :-) I definitely need to shed a few pounds (or stones...) before this trip!

Bob, I had a sneaky look at your pictures - you have some amazing photos! I think i will be taking some tips from you this holiday! Oh, and was that you with the broken leg?! what on earth happened? I hope everything has healed ok?

Hi Louise

I'm afraid it snowed at Annapurna base camp and then froze. I fell down the steps leading from the base camp back into the sancturary. Fortunately I didn't know the leg was broken in 2 places at the time. I could weight bear so I strapped it up but it was quite swollen when we got back to Pokhara (3 days walk) so I went to the hospital and they put me in a pot. I had a wheelchair for the last few days of the holiday but its not the same and I couldn't get round Kathmandu.

Its fixed now and since I'm going back you can tell that I really enjoyed the trip despite everything. But I've bought some Yaktraxs for this trip. Once bitten....

Hi Everyone,

Bob, that sounds so painful! I am glad to hear that you are fully recovered and raring to go again though! The Yaktraxs sound like a good idea... i am considering investing in some before we go.

Only 10 and a half weeks to go (not that i'm counting or anything!). How is everyones training going? We are going for a good long walk at the weekends and then trying to do a couple of activities during the week, but are still finding we are aching a lot after every walk which is not promising!! Diane, have you and Ian started putting bricks in your rucksacks yet??!! Mine is hard enough to lug up (small) hills even without!

Hope you are all well and excited about the fast approaching trip!

Hi All,

I'm also on this trip. Is anyone thinking of buying or hiring any stuff when we arrive?

Hi Lisa,

Good to hear from you! Are you looking forward to the holiday? Have you done much trekking before?

I am not planning to hire/buy anything there, but i know people that have previously done that, and normally the guides are happy to organise that kind of stuff in Kathmandu for you. What kind of stuff are you thinking of?

Hi Lisa

Look forward to seeing you.

Can't be all that long to go I've had to pay the balance.

I bought a down jacket in Kathmandu last time. Most of the stuff there is fake but works and was cheap. You can get most Northface stuff. We were a bit pushed for time and only got to one shop enroute to diner the first evening. I think I paid about £30 for the jacket. It was fine for the trek and I've used it a fair bit since I got back.

I've been in the gym a bit to get back in shape but I'm about to undo it all. I'm off to Texas next week and a few weeks of American portion sizes may leave its mark

Does anyone know how many people are going?

Hi Bob,

Wow, you are lucky, 2 holidays in a row!!

I can't beleive there are only 5 weeks to go... i am definitely not feeling ready for the trip yet, although i doubt i ever will!

Apparantly there are 9 people booked on the trip now - quite a good number i think.

Looking forward to it :-)

Hi All,
really looking fwd to it!
I feel really unprepared, fitness and equipment wise!

Went for a walk this morning to try and break in my walking boots.

Have a good weekend!

Hey,

Less than 3 weeks to go!! How is everyone feeling?! I am starting to feel a little nervous as I am sure my fitness level is actually going down the closer we get to 15th April!! I am thinking about starting to pack soon as I am sure I will probably discover a lot of things i need to buy!

I hope you are all looking forward to it.... i know i am :-)

Yes always exciting once the tickets arrive. I don't know about buying stuff its trying to decide what not to take to keep to the weight limit on the trek!!

Just been back to the gym and to my surprise only put on 1lb in Texas. Got in a sneaky bit of practice too. Visited McDonald obseratory at 7800 ft and climbed 3 flight of stairs. I know last time we all joked we should have done our training walking up tower blocks.

See you all soon

Hey everyone....

One week to go! I can hardly beleive this holiday has finally come around!

I currently have a huge pile of clothes/equipment/food ready to pack and am sure that it must weigh more than 10kg, but i'll worry about that when i pack it!

Well done with the fitness Bob, i have given up trying to get fit.... if i am not fit now then its too late anyway (yes, a very bad attitude i agree!).

Anyway, i hope you are all now really excited. Have a lovely weekend in the sun, and im looking forward to meeting you all in a week

Louise
